12 Upcoming Movie Sequels Nobody Asked For

These movies are indicative of much that is wrong with the contemporary Hollywood business model, and we all need to vote with our wallets to discourage it.

We as movie fans frequently decry Hollywood for its apparent lack of originality: for every movie sequel I'm looking forward to in the next few years (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Star Wars Episode VII, Jurassic World and so on), there are dozens of movie sequels that just shouldn't be happening at all. I'm generally talking about movies that, more often than not, were box office successes (for some ungodly reason), yet were panned by critics, or decent movies that simply do not warrant a sequel: there's no room for it, so nobody wanted it, yet the studios have gone ahead and started production anyway. Needless to say, aside from one or two curiosities on this list, I will be giving these 12 movies a very wide berth indeed: they're indicative of much that is wrong with the contemporary Hollywood business model, and we all need to vote with our wallets to discourage it. And of course, if you for any reason think these movies might actually work (lord knows why), feel free to explain yourself in the comments!

12. Hot Tub Time Machine 2

Release Date: December 25th I am a big fan of 2010's rambunctious comedy, which saw a group of friends transported back to the 1980s via the titular time travel device, resulting in plenty of hilarious (and disgusting) hijinks. The film was a modest success with both critics and audiences, but did its $61 million box office (against a $36 million budget) really warrant another go-around? This movie must have sold like hot cakes on home video, because otherwise it's difficult to imagine why anyone could be bothered to make a sequel with such a minimal promise of returns. Then there's the creative argument, that the original idea worked well, but to retread it a second time is probably going to wear audience goodwill down severely. And there's the fact that John Cusack is not returning for the role of protagonist Adam, though on-the-rise funnyman Adam Scott will instead play his son, Adam Jr, which does admittedly have some pretty hilarious potential. I'll go see it out of morbid curiosity, but I'm not expecting great things. Fingers crossed for this one.
