13 Upcoming Movie Sequels Nobody Asked For
Creativity is dead.
It's a given that movie sequels are very much Hollywood's bread and butter: the vast majority of hit films end up franchised out at some point, usually being irreparably run into the ground or, in rarer cases, managing to outpace audience fatigue and creative stagnation (looking at you, The Fast and the Furious).
For every hugely-anticipated upcoming sequel, be it Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Thor: Ragnarok, Kingsman: The Golden Circle or Avengers: Infinity War, there are literally dozens of follow-ups churned out not because fans demanded them, but because a studio executive somewhere caught a lingering whiff of the departing gravy train.
While it's entirely possible there are a few surprisingly decent movies among these upcoming sequels, the odds are absolutely working against them, because they're clear products of Hollywood's excessive greed, blissfully unfussed that nobody wanted them in the first place.
13. Shrek 5
Release Date: TBA 2019
The Shrek franchise well and truly dried up after 2010's Shrek Forever After, when general critical and audience enthusiasm had essentially evaporated, and DreamWorks totally knew it too.
Though the big green guy's last outing was fashioned as a farewell to the character, it was also carefully left open for another movie, and though audiences have essentially moved on from the series, DreamWorks is looking to flog the dead horse regardless with yet another sequel.
Could It Be Any Good?: Well, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are expected to return, so that's something, but as much as DreamWorks claims Shrek 5 will "reinvent" the series, it's hard to imagine an approach that would shake all those cobwebs loose.
Expect mediocrity and be pleasantly surprised if it finds a way to be relevant again.
