Coming across a truly original Hollywood movie is quite the feat: every week sees the release of sequels, prequels, remakes, re-imaginings and so on, such that it feels like nothing's remotely original anymore.

However, if you dig deep and rake through the next few years of upcoming movies, you will find a few standout original and alluring projects. Note that this excludes adaptations of acclaimed books, biographical films and those rooted in previous lore, in order to find the visions which are the most independent and unique of all.

This freshness can be found in just about every genre, from sober dramas to animation, action and even documentaries, and while it's easy to be cynical about the future of cinema as a cash-hungry machine, these films at least provide some hope for the industry, that creativity and soul aren't going anywhere.

Release Date: October 14

What It's About: Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is a genius accountant who moonlights as an assassin, but when a tightening net forces him to take a legitimate accounting job, his big discovery results in bodies piling up around him.

Why It Can Save Hollywood: While directed by the rock solid Gavin O'Connor (Warrior), there's a strong David Fincher vibe to this one, with the impressive trailer showing off crisp cinematography and what appears to be a cerebral, character-driven approach to the action thriller genre.

Considering the roll Affleck has been on over the last few years and the fab supporting cast he's joined by (J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, Anna Kendrick, Jeffrey Tambor, Jon Lithgow), it'd be easy to see this one ending up in Best Picture contention at next year's Oscars.

With all the forgettable star vehicle thrillers audiences have to sit through, here's something that seems a little classier and more considered.
