Gothams Reckoning

  • Bane (Tom Hardy) – The Dark Knight Rises

The first three lines announced everything we needed to know about Nolan’s final big villain (or so some thought), and were a major part of the film’s marketing, amping up the cool factor considerably and promising a fitting end to the Dark Knight arc. How were we to know he’d be cruelly undermined by a narrative twist that devolved him massively and took away all of his impact until his final, embarrassingly simple end?

  • David (Michael Fassbender) – Prometheus

Big things like huge pertinent questions hanging over the end of the film, you mean David? It might have been a hugely frustrating experience, but Prometheus still had its moments, and there was enough in there, for good or bad to make it one of the stand-out cinematic moments of the year. The android’s musings on the nature of existence proved a particularly loaded moment, even if the script’s insistence in regard to the film’s relationship to the Alien films is a little on the nose.
