Fantastic though Jackman was, the year's very best performance came from Frances McDormand, who played infuriated, bereaved mother Angela Hayes in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

McDormand's ferociously angry, aggressively sarcastic performance manages to be both uproariously funny and overwhelmingly sad all at once, with Martin McDonagh nimbly switching tonal gears without it seeming jarring or awkward.

Her anger seethes out of the film's every pore, but she's also not above calling someone a "f***head" when the time calls for it. It's the best performance of her career (quite an achievement), and so it's little surprise she's a frontrunner for the Best Actress Oscar. Deservedly so.
