20 Best Movies Of 2018

A banner year for diverse genre filmmaking...and Nicolas Cage.

Spider Man Into The Spider Verse Black Panther A Quiet Place
Sony, Marvel Studios & Paramount

2018 has been one hell of a year for movies, and between theatrical releases and the increasing slate of Netflix Originals at your fingertips, there's never been a more diverse platter of cinematic content available.

While separating the wheat from the chaff is easy enough, settling on a top 20 for the year sure isn't easy, especially in a year that delivered so many brilliant tentpole movies alongside the usual spate of smaller, awards-courting masterworks.

From unexpectedly terrific genre films to auteur movies just about everyone expected to be brilliant, these 20 films are the absolute must-sees of 2018.

They're the movies that, either because of their sheer entertaining panache or artful emotion - or maybe even both - represent cinema at its finest over the last 12 months.

That's not to say that the Academy's going to have the courage to recognise enough of them, but when it comes to standing the test of time, these 20 are future classics without a doubt...
