2018 has been one hell of a year for movies, and between theatrical releases and the increasing slate of Netflix Originals at your fingertips, there's never been a more diverse platter of cinematic content available.

While separating the wheat from the chaff is easy enough, settling on a top 20 for the year sure isn't easy, especially in a year that delivered so many brilliant tentpole movies alongside the usual spate of smaller, awards-courting masterworks.

From unexpectedly terrific genre films to auteur movies just about everyone expected to be brilliant, these 20 films are the absolute must-sees of 2018.

They're the movies that, either because of their sheer entertaining panache or artful emotion - or maybe even both - represent cinema at its finest over the last 12 months.
