10. The Devil's Backbone/Pan's Labyrinth

Pans Labyrinth In my book Guillermo Del Toro has made two certifiable masterpieces: The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth. The two films are spiritual companions since they both deal with horrific and difficult situations from a child's point of view. They really do beg to be watched together because The Devil's Backbone is a ghost story as perceived through the eyes of a young boy and Pan's Labyrinth is a modern day fairytale that is told by focusing on a young girl. The journeys of the two children are similar enough to make the films very enjoyable when viewed back to back but different enough to provide some narrative diversity. Now Del Toro needs to make a third film to complete what could be a fantastic trilogy of dealing with the darkest themes in life through in the most innocent ways.
