20 Mind-Blowing Facts About The Dark Knight Trilogy

5. Anthony Hopkins Turned Down The Role Of Alfred

The cast of The Dark Knight Trilogy might just be one of the greatest to ever grace a blockbuster series of films and that was always the plan; Christopher Nolan wanted to make a movie with an A-List ensemble similar to the type of epic films that were released in the 1950s. Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth was obviously a fantastic decision on the director's part, but Nolan originally had his eye on another beloved British actor. Anthony Hopkins was approached, but quickly turned the part down. He would, of course, eventually take on a comic book movie role as Odin in Thor, but Batman Begins marked the second time that he turned down the chance to be in a movie starring this character. Hopkins had also been eyed for the role of Mr. Freeze in Batman and Robin, but he wasn't keen then either. It was only after that Joel Schumacher decided to head in a... different direction.
