25 Incredibly Well-Made Horror Films Directed By Women

Women making horror movies?! Preposterous!

A little over a year ago, 13-year-old Emily DiPrimio launched a KickStarter campaign to help fund her dream of directing her very own slasher movie - she would go on to raise over $30,000 and make her fantasy a reality. The film in question, Carver, follows "a group of young teenagers who are haunted by a despicable act they committed when they were younger." Obviously a story such as this would get plenty of coverage within the horror community. Though, oddly enough, media outlets were less shocked with Emily€™s age than they were with the fact that she was indeed a female. A young girl who's interested in making horror movies? Outrageous! Sarcasm aside, it's no secret that most horror films are generally told from a male perspective, despite the fact that studies have shown the audiences for these films are at least 50% female. Though, this isn't to claim that women never get their say, From Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to the recent rise of the Soska sisters, women have been instrumental in the development of the horror genre on both page and screen - though their successes have often been obscured by heaps of torture porn and barely-clothed revenge scenarios. Nevertheless, this list today will attempt to highlight some of horror€™s most enduring hits and little known gems that were indeed directed by women. Inevitably, there are some minor spoilers ahead.
