5 Hidden Film Treasures Among The Video Nasties

5. Evil Speak (1981)

Evil Speal Stanley is a military school cadet who is mercilessly bullied by his fellow cadets. Utterly miserable, he comes across the writings and spells of a long passed Satan worshipping priest called Father Estaban. Stanley is a computer geek and he uses his machine to translate the writings into something decipherable. He then vows to get even with his class mates using black magic. This involves Carrie type shenanigans as Stanley begins to wreak havoc with his fellow cadets via his computer. We are treated to the famous boar attacks during the course of the movie. Cheesy 1980s Revenge-of-the-nerd horror fare which is so silly and anodyne in its horror and terror factor that it cannot possibly be in the same league as the true horrors in Cannibal Holocaust and The Gestapo's Last Orgy. I cannot imagine any reason why anyone would get offended by this film - the Satanism is just a convenient plot contrivance for Stanley to get his own back on his fellow cadets, it is pretty milquetoast fare. The gore is no worse than a Nightmare on Elm Street film. For me, it is good wholesome fun with Clint Howard putting in an enjoyable performance - his acting is not the best, but this strangely adds to the film's appeal. If you enjoy 1980s horror movies and you have a nose for very mature cheese, get thee a copy of Evil Speak and heartily enjoy yourself - finally you can see in its entirety what your moral guardians didn't want you to see!

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
