As much as I didn’t want to like the Spider-Man reboot this year, I admit that it wasn’t bad, and there were even things I liked more than Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. When it comes to Spider-Man though, I feel like the outspoken one, because I didn’t mind Spider-Man 3. In fact, when it first came out, it was one of my favorite movies. Tobey Maguire did an amazing job in his role, and his performance I think was as close to a perfect Spider-Man as we’re going to get (disregarding his “emo” scene in the third movie). Andrew Garfield isn’t a bad Spider-Man, it’s just that Tobey is better, and that is something that we’re going to have to accept if we’re going to like this reboot.
That being said, this trilogy, or however movies they decide to make, does have the potential to be better. For one, I liked the action sequences in The Amazing Spider-Man more than almost every battle in the other series, with the exception of the Green Goblin fights. I also like that the villains for the most part seem like they’re going to be different than Raimi’s villains (except for the inevitable Goblin). The casting of Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, and Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben were also perfect castings in my opinion. Now, the movie wasn’t perfect and missed out on a lot in my opinion, but it was an introduction to a new Spider-Man, and I’ll let it slide if they capitalize with the next movie.
Here is what I think needs to be done in the next movie to get this reboot on track, and give it the potential to outdo its predecessor…

I’ve always been a massive Spiderman fan since I watched the cartoons as a child (never been a comic book fan) so I’m really excited to see Electro (especially with Foxx as him!). Although I feel we need to have the goblin in this trilogy I would love to have Rhino or Scorpion, however I feel these would work better as hench man of The Kingpin.
I think Rhino or Scorpion would be awesome to see on the big screen, but I think that they wouldn’t be able to hold a movie by themselves and would need another bigger villain with them in the movie. Maybe in the third with Green Goblin?
The Amazing Spiderman was amazing and so will be it’s sequel..Can’t Wait :D
I thought Andrew was the perfect Spiderman. It would be easy for him to show a more ‘mature’ side as the story would take a leap by atleast a year or two (I’m guessing!) Plus, the interplay between a talented and young cast (Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane, Dane DeHaan as Harry O, Emma and Andrew) would be crucial.I think Foxx will make a great villain and you are right, his role sketch would be crucial for this incarnation of the franchise.A more mature Spiderman would automatically be required to take on a bigger, more evil villain. What needs to be done is to get these characters (Spiderman and Electro) to interact more outside of their outfits (as regular people). That way the audience gets to see who they really are.Once the action starts, they would be in for a great ride!
According to Foxx, they actually start off as friends or something like that, I watched the interview really late at night when I wrote this so I don’t remember exactly what he said, but I think they’re supposed to be friends somehow. It also sounded like Electro is going to be working for Oscorp or some other big business like in the first one, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a relationship similiar to Peter and Doc Oc’s one in the second Spiderman movie before he turns evil
As a massive fan of the other Spider-Man movies I was very much looking forward to the new rebooted version after a fairly disappointing (in my eyes) Spider-Man 3!! I thought the film started well and after the first 20 minutes felt there was a promising movie on the way! However after watching the film I felt there was a lot missing as if I’d missed half of the film! The villain in my eyes was a poor choice as I like a super hero film to be realistic and believable!! A giant lizard just didnt do it for me and the lack of storyline as I said earlier was disappointing! I felt Andrew Garfield however was an excellent choice and look forward to seeing him pull on the spidey costume again as I feel there is a lot of potential after an average first film!!!
I don’t understand it, the comic books that these movies are based on aren’t “realistic or believable” so why do so many people seem dead set on the movies being realistic/believable?
Agreed with HereXero ^
I absoluetly loved that they kept the Osbornes out of this one. The first three were heavily focused on them, and I needed the break. I thought keeping Osborne ambigious and mysterious was a great addition, because it sets up so much in the sequels. I’m sure we’ll get the Hobgoblin or Green Goblin in the third, with a bigger buildup in the sequel. I think they need to have JJ in there if only because he’s such an iconic character. Even just a cameo would work. I thought the first film was terrific, and actually do hope they leave his parents out. It doesn’t add much to me, except if Peter realizes Osbourne had something to do with their disappearance and it adds to the inevitable showdown. I wonder if Gwen does die by Osbourne like in the comics, cause that would be awesome.
Actually really enjoyed this film, probably because the Raimi trilogy just disappointed towards the end. It did seem like half of the film was made just to set up a new series though, so many unanswered questions. They also need to use new villains, in my opinion, otherwise this new series will just be compared to the Raimi trilogy until we’re sick of this as well.
I really loved the film. I admit there were some problems, i.e.: the sudden reboot so soon after Spider-Man 3, not really delving into the untold story that was promised, being to similar to what we’ve seen before which was expected. It’s the origin story! You can’t really change anything crucial in an origin story. I really hope that in the sequel we are told more about Peter’s parents. They were S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in the comics so maybe when Peter discovers this, Nick fury asks him to join the Avengers in the third Avengers film, if that happens. He won’t appear in the second one because they still have to introduce Ant-Man and The Wasp who were founding members. Can’t wait for the sequel.
Electro also used products from Stark industries to develop his powers in his origin story, so the potential to make Avenger connections is there if they want to use them.
I can’t see how someone that doesn’t know how “Osborn” is written and says that Peter knows Harry since high-school is qualified to write about Spider-Man.
I wrote this story at like 2 in the morning so I’m sorry about the typo. I haven’t read that much of the spiderman comics so I got my knowledge from the Raimi films and random research I do. In the Raimi films, they graduate high school together, so pardon my mistake please.
Like others I enjoyed this reboot way more than Raimi’s version, but I wasn’t totally on board for the inevitable sequel until news broke that Foxx was taking on the role of Electro. Now I can’t wait to see the next one, Foxx has proven himself as an actor (at least to me) so I have no worries about his handling of the role. If this sequel fails it will be nobodies fault but the production team.
It seems in the first film that the story of Peter’s parents is from the Ultimate universe, with them as biologists not spies. That should lead to Venom. I’m not sure how Venom can fit into all of this with Electro and the Osborns. So much for the Venom spin off :(
I’m a fan of the comics and in my opinion I think Andrew was better. He played the role more accurately.
I agree Electro isnt that well known a villain, but if we are lucky Jamie Foxx will make him as memorable as Heath Ledger’s Joker
