7 Major Problems With Batman Returns

2. Did Batman Just Grin As He Blew That Guy Up?

One of the hands down worst things about this film is just the blatant disrespect to key character ideals €“ particularly the cavalier nature in which Batman kills people. During Batman Returns we see Batman immolate one of the Red Triangle gang using the Batmobile, strike Catwoman off a building, and then stick an IED down the pants of another gang member €“ while he GRINS! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59inr7BBx0s This isn€™t nit-picking €“ the question of how far Batman can be pushed without resorting to acting like enemies is pretty much the fundamental foundation of the character€™s psyche. It is one of the most interesting facets of Batman, and one of the most important. So, again the question must be asked - if you€™re not interested in the characteristics that make the character unique and famous, then why would you bother adapting the character at all? If you just wanted a hero that had no problem lighting people on fire, or sticking explosives down their pants (while grinning!) then you don€™t need Batman. They could have just signed up Sylvester Stallone and made a new Rambo film. For better or for worse, Batman doesn€™t kill people. If you€™re going to ignore that, then why even bother calling him Bruce Wayne? Why not dress him in hot pink and have him defeat his villains through the power of interpretive dance? If you don€™t get that element of the Batman character then you don€™t really get Batman. There€™s nothing wrong with that, everyone has different tastes. But that doesn€™t mean the character should be disrespected and ruined for the millions who do.
