With news emerging recently that Conan the Barbarian and Sahara writers Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer have now turned in their script for a big screen version of Doctor Strange, it now seems a big possibility that the Sorcerer Supreme could be, alongside Joe Cornish and Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man, next in line for the Marvel movie treatment. And as we always like to do with our own fantasy casting series, discussions at the WhatCulture! water colour recently quickly moved on to the topic of who would be the ideal actor to anchor the Doctor Strange movie, following in the footsteps of the Marvel leads Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Chris Evans (Captain America).
An important player in the Marvel Universe, Doctor Stephen Strange would push audiences further into the more fantastical aspects of the Marvel comic book universe in much the same way Thor did and so, the right actor and tone is essential to ground the human drama. Until an accident cripples his hands, Strange is an arrogant and self-centred surgeon – a talented man of medicine who then turns to magic and mysticism in an effort to regain what he’s lost.
While the fantasy elements of the idea could definitely appeal to family audiences, the character also attracted a number of college-aged fans early on due its mind-warping and hallucinogenic ‘trippy’ storytelling. So perhaps with a lower budget, the ideal Doctor Strange would be targeting slightly older, more cult audiences?
Co-created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko and first appearing in Strange Tales #110 (July 1963) – the character is usually depicted as being a little older than that of his peers and we imagine Marvel will only be looking at mid 30′s and above for the role. An intelligent and charasmatic actor is required and someone who can make the magic and wizardry believable…
Strange Suggestion: JOHNNY DEPP
While Johnny Depp (48) has long been a top message-board choice for Strange, able to always stay the star amid all kinds of special effects and Tim Burton/Jack Sparrow make-up, it’s thought that Marvel’s second-tier heroes will be working to smaller budgets which would presumably rule the A-listers out. However, that’s not to say with the backing of Disney’s funding… a studio where Johnny Depp has made billions and continues to do so working with them on further Pirates adventures and a new franchise The Lone Ranger – that they could be swayed to stretch their wallets a little.
Depp would bring with him that star power and acting supremacy that would give a comic book adaptation so much legitimacy and as Doctor Strange is a refreshingly older Marvel hero, more along the same lines as Tony Stark, there’s a huge opportunity here to bring in a real star. One too of course who has a huge legion of fans who don’t usually turn up for comic book films and therefore could bring with him an untapped audience.
But it would be a mighty tough battle to get Depp into a Marvel picture. For one, we don’t know how interested he is in comic books (he’s never done a comic book adaptation, though he is interested in bringing Rex Mundi to the screen) and the script/director package would have to be something particularly appealing to nab him. And then there’s the fact his schedule is almost always full to the brim and lord knows how he would fit Doctor Strange and it’s sequels and an Avengers appearance in there.
Having said all that if a deal can be done… Depp would rule as Doctor Strange.
Strange Suggestion: VIGGO MORTENSEN
Here’s the suggestion that really has us excited at WhatCulture!
Viggo Mortensen (52) is an acting chameleon. He can do any role in any genre and bring with him the intensity and method-acting skill that only few of his peers can match. Perhaps even he is unmatched in this department with only Daniel Day-Lewis (who by the way, 15 years ago, would have made a great Doctor Strange) you feel a better actor, pound for pound.
He played one of the ultimate fantasy genre heroes in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and certainly has the look for the role. Though, like Depp, his acquirement would come with a hefty price for Marvel (he priced himself out of playing General Zod in Superman reboot Man of Steel) and it’s hard to see him getting too excited about playing a comic book magician.
Still he’s probably our favourite of the bunch here.
Strange Suggestion: PATRICK DEMPSEY
While not every choice will be based on the actor having already played a Doctor or Surgeon, the key factor about Patrick Dempsey (45) as Stephen Strange is that he actually wants the part. While promoting Transformers 3, Dempsey mentioned he hoped Doctor Strange would be a film they made soon, and he wanted in on the act.
While best known as the ‘McDreamy’ Dr Derek Shepherd in Grey’s Anatomy, Dempsey stood out as the potentially suspicious Det. Mark Kincaid amid the established ensemble and new soon-to-be-spilled blood in Scream 3 and has demonstrated a knack for oddball tones as in Enchanted. Maybe McDreamy could become McTrippy in one easy move.
For a lower budget Marvel movie he is probably on the right pay-scale… but doubtless to say that the role of Doctor Strange would push his acting abilities further than anything he has done in the past, mainly because it is so different to everything he’s ever done.
Another internet favourite has been Hugh Laurie having already proved his worth as an arrogant, self-centred and crippled doctor. But there’s a good chancehe doesn’t want to spend his entire stateside career playing egomaniac doctors so we’ll leave him off the list for now as well.
Strange Suggestion: LIAM NEESON
Expertly combining the sage-like qualities and action-chops of Strange, Liam Neeson (59) seems almost too easy a choice. Though we imagine Neeson may want to steer clear of CGI-backgrounds after The Phantom Menace and that he is done with wearing a natty goatee-beard after his turn as Ra’s Al Ghul in Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. However, when it comes to actor choices who could play one of the Marvel Universe’s older heroes and still provide pure star appeal from a movie poster, surely Neeson’s got to be a top choice.
Though his casting would break the WhatCulture! rule of – one superhero role per actor – something we always hope casting directors would avoid at all costs. And he turns 60 next year… too old to be playing superhero with Marvel and The Avengers.
Strange Suggestion: JASON ISAACS
With a proven track record of hurling big-budget magic around thanks to the Harry Potter series, Jason Isaacs (48) also brings the intensity and sheer charisma that could make him the perfect Strange. Audiences probably associate Isaacs more with playing villainous roles (including, again, voicing as Ra’s Al Ghul and Sinestro in DC Animated Universe movies Batman: Under the Red Hood and Green Lantern: Emerald Knights respectively) but perhaps his upcoming role as Michael Britten in Fox’s alternate reality drama Awake may help to shift people’s perceptions. But then again, as Awake seems like one of the most promising of the upcoming US TV series, perhaps we should be hoping that Isaacs will be too busy making that for the next few years.
Perhaps a left field choice but one we would fully support to get Isaacs out of his typecasting prison.
Strange Suggestion: JOHN CUSACK
Like Robert Downey Jr to Iron Man, perhaps Doctor Strange is the chance to bring a revered offbeat actor back from the wilderness via superheroisation (the wilderness in this case being some decidedly average movies rather than the problems Downey Jr experienced). John Cusack (45) has always managed to add quirky charm to his roles that have never seemed out of place against the genre of his movies. The Stephen King adaptation 1408 has shown him comfortable amidst the supernatural and the classic Grosse Point Blank means we know he can be at the centre of genre-smashing stories which might otherwise prove tonally problematic.
Word from Cusack’s role as Edgar Allen Poe in The Raven looks promising for a return to form (as well as that Cusack can carry facial hair) but better yet, could Cusack and his writing team from Grosse Point Blank and High Fidelity ensure that Doctor Strange is the perfectly tailored vehicle for Cusack and for a more offbeat blockbuster?
He would have to workout a bit but he could do it.
Strange Suggestion: ED NORTON
Techincally, Ed Norton (41) already has played Doctor Strange having supposedly based his performance of Eisenheim in 2006’s The Illusionist on the character of Stephen Strange. Enigmatic, intelligent and artful, Norton fits the bill perfectly and it’s almost a tragedy to know that he would never get to play Strange because he has already appeared in the new Marvel universe as The Hulk (though then fired from The Avengers for Mark Ruffalo).
Even casting aside The Avengers saga, the rumoured consternation on the final cut of The Incredible Hulk would suggest that it would be unlikely that Ed Norton would have been near the top of Marvel’s casting list… but giving him the lead role of a character the actor has clear interest in might be a nice apology for blocking his Avengers pay-day.
Strange Suggestion: BRANDON ROUTH
Bear with me on this one. With Disney’s acquisition of Marvel, it’s highly possible that Doctor Strange might end up being played by an actor much younger than he is portrayed in the comics. Most comic book origin movies are led by actors in their mid-to-late 20′s and as Strange is a world-renowned medical talent, it could easily make sense that he is somewhat precocious, graduating medical school faster than most.
While an elder, wiser Strange would probably please comic fans more, there’s no denying that someone like Brandon Routh (31) has the presence and charisma to convince as a surgeon as well as a mystical figure (and one who we know looks good in a cape/cloak). Routh needs a hit beyond ‘that role’ and, while both Strange and Superman are comic book heroes, they couldn’t be further apart. So while the idea of someone under 40 playing Strange might bother you, if it’s going to happen, can you think of anyone better? Admit it, you’re already mentally doodling facial hair on the picture above!
Thor proved that audiences can take on fantasy but Green Lantern also suggested that the tone of something set in another dimension can also go wrong. There’s no doubt that a live-action Doctor Strange could be good but getting it right won’t be easy. Who would be your ideal choice of actor to make the movie perfectly Strange?

brandon routh is a terrible actor. whats wrong with you?
I ABSOLUTELY agree with you.
The words ‘charismatic’ and ‘Brandon Routh’ simply don’t belong in the same sentence. I have no idea what the big push to give this guy work, is.. however I DO notice that it usually comes from article writers, and not forum posters, although they too are guilty of it.
Brandon Routh can go sit in the corner for a couple of decades and practice his ‘craft’.. maybe we’ll come back to him then to see if he’s gotten any better (doubtful though).
I think your full of it, Brandon Routh Played superman as perfect to the Richard Donner series as close to Reeves as possible… yea the movie did suck and confused but the actual way he played Supes was great way…. the moves was just placed in the wrong time frame…. and I’ve seen his other movies hes not terrible he just hasn’t gotten the boost of a great movie except Scotty Pilgrim…. so you should def. get you facts straight
B. Routh–never heard of him, way too young.
P.Dempsey–Sorcerer Please! Way too weak, hair ain’t enough. Voice-not.
J.Isaacs–Anything from inferior Harry Potter, again, spare us.
E.Norton–Could pull it off, wants it, homaged it…voice a negative.
J.Cusack–Could pull it off, tall, but voice, again…not top two/three.
J.Depp–Can do anything, looks…but short, might Depp-ize it, weird it.
Viggo–Can do anything, love him…but gut tells me a wee laconic.
*J.Caviezel–Natural mysteriousness, stature, looks…a possible!
*Liam Neeson–Seems made for it, stature, mystery, VOICE, Power…age?
*DD Lewis–Best actor/stature/looks part/power, just tone down sinister.
**Someone else said they liked Liam for The Dread Dormammu/voice, and could see Daniel Day Lewis or Caviezel as Dr. Strange and Liam as his nemesis.
Clea? Critical, no? I think I had a little comic crush on her in the early 1970′s, and whether or not it is a moot (in the Avengers already) point, I off the cuff picture Scarlett Johanssons’ impeccable face as befitting (among other impeccable portions of her anatomy).
Only stumble here tonight, and from other sites first, on this topic…so no real time for Clea casting thoughts in depth.
**I will say, just as I thought a young enough Richard Gere would have been a better choice for the Hanks miscasting in The Davinci Code flicks (or a younger Alec Baldwin), I think, in his day, Richard Gere could have at least sent his head shots for the Doctor and earned a casting call, and likely might have been interested, with his Eastern leanings.
Interested now on other people’s thoughts of who ought play Clea? And for my money, it should be BRIEF backstory, and The Dread One for his baddie, complete with Clea, her father, and a trip to DD’s Domain, and the Mindless Ones.
I like the idea of Routh as Strange. Marvel aren’t going to hire anyone over the age of 35 for the role, let’s be honest. Of all the known younger actors out there he is the best option.
What are you smoking? RDJ is in his 40′s, Ruffalo is in his 40s. Sam Jackson I think is in his 50s. Dr. Strange is one of the older characters in Marvel and could be played by a healthy 60 year old no problem. Neeson, Danial Day Lewis, and Hugh laurie are the best choices.
How about Steve Buscemi?
You know once upon a time I always thought he would make a good Scarecrow for the Batman series.
He wouldn’t be a good fit for Strange though. Would love to see him in the Marvel universe but not as the leading man.
Less than 35 you can forget. For me, I would like to see a younger version of Liam Neeson.
Josh Pence then? Given he’s playing a younger Ra’s in The Dark Knight Rises!
Johnny Depp has my vote, he has just the right kind of strangeness about him(no pun intended)and the right age. 2nd would be Liam Neeson.
I think Jason isaacs would be best for the role especially after his role in case histories and Harry potter
I can’t really see anyone on there that could get cast or I would even like to see get cast.
The prospect of any of those actors as Strange doesn’t excite me at all – and yet – I’m also struggling to think of anyone I would like to see in this role.
Also – something which could be worth noting is that Marvel seem to be borrowing a lot from their “Ultimate Universe” for the films. In the Ultimate Universe Doctor Strange is much younger.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_versions_of_Doctor_Strange#Ultimate_Doctor_Strange
I remember at one point they were looking at Jonathan Rhys Meyers, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they go for someone around 30 years old.
How about Jason Patrick?
Link to pick of him.
“Depp… he’s never done a comic book adaptation”
he did ‘from hell’ in 2001.
very true. And a shameful misfire as a movie. Could have been epic.
I quite agree with the suggestion of Jason Isaacs, but am not sure where the statement about him being in a “typecasting prison” comes from. He’s played brain damaged psychopathic gangsters (Brotherhood), kind and charismatic detectives (Case Histories) as well as his more publicized turns as Captain Hook, Lucius Malfoy and Colonel Tavington. What seems oddest to me is that, with all the photos of him out there with his natural dark colored hair which would match the Doctor Strange character (he even had facial hair for awhile there–photos which are easily found in Google)… you chose to post a photo of him as Lucius. Very strange thought process.
It’s like Alan Rickman says when interviewers persist in saying he’s “known for playing villains”… he’s played many parts, it’s just that the villains were in pictures with big advertising budgets.
And oh please god may they not cast Brandon Routh. I really like Doctor Strange and hope they do not ruin this like they do half the pictures I look forward to. : (
What about Sacha Baron Cohen??
How about David Tennant? I think he’s about to break big with Fright Night and his popularity on both sides of the Atlantic gives the film even more of a built-in audience than it already had.
Chris – David Tennant definitely crossed my mind but I was put off by whether he’d want to play another oddly powered Doctor or not!
Gavin – I haven’t read the Ultimate Doctor Strange so it’s interesting they’d cast him younger. The Ultimate Universe always seems to model their characters on specific actors (Samuel L Jackson for example – that turned out nicely!!) Did the ultimate Doc Strange resemble anyone in your opinion?
Another thought of a younger Doctor Strange that crossed my mind would be Zachary Quinto. Again, it would be a role that would stretch him far further than Spock or Sylar but you never know.
I think one of the ways Disney/Marvel would be happy keeping Strange as an older character would be making his ‘sidekick’ Clea the audience’s way in kinda like Marty McFly to Doc Brown.
If I had to pick someone? Robert Downey Jr. But that ship has sailed.
Here however is also an interesting rumour: http://nerdbastards.com/2010/08/02/rumor-adrien-brody-in-talks-for-dr-strange/brodydrstrange/
Adrian Brody anyone? It could fly… it’s a little unusual. Since Brody’s stint in Predators I have a new found respect for his abilities (not that the performance itself was that great, just that he was able to pull off that type of role).
Strange is one of the most interesting and complex characters in the Marvel Universe. In mystical terms, the Earth’s sorcerer supreme is also uber powerful.
I’d love to see a Stephen Strange movie.
As to the actor – not Johnny Depp please – plus also he would be very expensive. Liam Neeson, Ed Norton, or Jason Isaacs would all be acceptable.
But would he play another outlandishly dressed comic book character after playing Batmanuel in the Tick? Plus he was already in The Dark Knight as the mayor and will appear as the same character in The Dark Knight Rises.
I do like the choice though.
Whoops! That reply was supposed to go to ryan below.
Nestor Carbonell. That’s all.
YES!!! That’s a really inspired choice! That would get me excited! I’m a big fan of his, he’s pulled off a range of roles really well!
i dont think ed norton should play him bc he has to play hulk in the movie.. but i think jonny depp should play doctor strange
Altough I did like him in the role, Ed Norton isn’t Hulk anymore. Its Mark Ruffalo. Who did an even better job in the role.
Ryan – that is ingenious!
Wayne Coyne from The Flaming Lips would be my first choice, followed closely by Bruce Campbell.
Oded Feher or no one.
Oops, Oded “Fehr” not Feher. None of the above choices work as Strange in my mind, *especially* not Routh.
For a younger Strange, how about Benedict Cumberbatch, does a brilliant job as Sherlock and its about time he went into movies.
Benedict Cumberbatch has done an excellent role with the eccentric Sherlock Holmes. He can be young and old at the same time. British training will do well here. Dr Strange needs to be about the language.
Completely agree Cumberbatch would be perfect
It’s really weird that you even think of non-actor (at all) Brandon Routh and forget the most obvious choice there is: George Clooney playing his most serious role ever.
I like some other suggestions here too. Nestor Carbonell would be really nice. Johnny Depp would be great, but would have to unfold himself a bit. Let me add two more, besides Clooney: James Denton (who might not have the necessary depth) and Matthew Fox (who might have).
keanu reeves,perfect
or Keith urban
Here is my list of actors who should play Dr.Strange: Johnny Deep, Liam Neeson, Jason Isaacs, Nestor Carbonell, and Christian Bale…
I would say Johnny Deep!
I like Jason Isaacs and Tom Welling.
Of the A-listers Johnny Depp would be ideal. Keanu would be OK too, but both would cost more than Marvell could pay.
Any actors around Liam Neeson’s age, would NOT GET SEQUELS. That ship has sailed. Too old.
Dempsey is too “soft” and frankly won’t get young audiences excited. He’s one of those actors that are more the favorites of old people. He is no action star.
Norton is too confusing, because he is the Hulk. And Cusack hasn’t had any audience for the last two decades. He’s still beloved by a few older fanyboys but that’s it.
Mortensen is really getting too old also. He is really pushing it as far as how old we can go age wise. Plus he seems more into prestige films these days.
As for Routh, I really asked myself if the writer was trolling or on drugs. Chuck fans hated him. Not even going to repeat everything they called him. Let’s just forget his existence and move on.
Adrien Brody could be serviceable, but wouldn’t really get me excited. He doesn’t really seem like someone to start an action franchise around, but he isn’t the most horrible suggestion.
Right off the bat the Mr. Hunter displays his incompetence by stating that Johnny Depp has never done a comic book adaptation. A few simple minutes of research would have turned up Depps starring role in From Hell a comic written by no less than legendary comic creator Alan Moore. You may have heard of his work, he did after all create John Constantine, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and The Watchmen – all of which works also have made it to the silver screen.
Sadly the quality of this filler piece (emphasis on the word piece) only goes downhill from there. Mr. Hunter I suggest that next time you NOT accept the job if you are unwilling to do the work.
How about shia lebeouf?
Orlando Bloom?
Hugh Laurie(sp?) [Dr. House for those who don't know his real name.] That is all.
Joseph Fiennes is my 1st choice, though with his current portrayal of MERLIN on CAMELOT-Starz, it is unlikely that he’d vie for another “similar” role. I like Zachary Quinto and believe that he’d be a fantastic younger DR.Strange. For a more mature DOC, my choices in order go to Liam Neeson, Viggo Mortenson, Christian Bale, Oded Fehr, Ed Norton, and then, Patrick Dempsey. Like Batman, Thor, Iron Man, and others, If Dr. Strange is played by anyone not giving 110% it will suck, great CGI or not….
Benedict Cumberbatch – Brilliant actor and perfect for the role.
I agree with the Benedict Cumberbatch suggestion. Astounding actor on screen or stage and I feel its his time. His time to get world wide recognition. To be honest I think he;d be able to do this role with one hand behind his back. I’d love his Sherlock Director Paul McGuigan who made Gangster No 1 to direct.
I actually think Bryan Cranston should play Dr. Strange. I loved his work on Malcolm and Breaking Bad, and I think he would be perfect for this role.
Daniel Day Lewis is obviously the best possible choice if there was a chance he would take the roll
Yes, Benedict Cumberbatch IS a great actor, if not one of the best, but I don’t think he’ll fit into Strange’s shoes. Also, IF, I repeat, IF they offered him the role, there’ll be a 90% chance that he won’t take it because Dr. Strange is a big franchise and he did turn down the role of another Doctor because of it.
But that’s just my opinion.
Anyway, my picks for Strange – Josh Brolin and James Franco.
I like Depp and Routh. They both have the presence and talent to pull it off.
i think that the dude who played the comedian in the watchmen movie should also play doctor strange because he looks just like him
Jim Caviezel
Gerald Butler.
My top 10 list of actors who should play Dr.Strange
1. Johnny Deep
2. Liam Neeson
3. Jason Isaacs
4. Viggo Mortensen
5. John Cusack
don’t forget Sean Penn
Edward Norton made a good Bruce Banner….but, i don’t wanna see him in a Marvel movie again….mainly cause idk if he’ll come back or not when we need him. If Dr. Strange does good enough to warrent a sequel…and norton doesn’t wanna do it it again….there could be problems. Luckily the avengers lucked and found someone who did a good banner in my opinion.
Liam Neeson could be a good choice, i know he’ll do a good job….but, if not Strange he could be a supporting role.
Brandon Routh i can’t see it, it seems like a bad match.
Johnny Depp i would like marvel to go with him but, only if they have to..idk how itd work out he might fit the role….but, we kinda got lucky when we got downey jr. as Stark and Samuel Jackson as Fury…and thank god Marvel’s not dumb enough to go for someone like Tom cruise…that would hurt the universe…..
maybe a no name…like do a real through audition for someone…and instead of just going for well knowns go for someone new
Charlie Sheen
JACK BLACK!!!! j/k.. :)
How about another Harry Potter jerkass: Alan Rickman
right i have been reading up on this for hours and personally i think ant man/giant man and the wasp is nailed on for some part of the next film because pym is integrel to the overall avengers story arc (becoming giant man, creating ultron and vision which will probably and hopefully be plot no 3 ) , my choices would be david tennant maybe nathon fillon coz everyone keeps saying hes the one, and for the wasp ellen page would be perfect but not sure shed wanna do a minor charector otherwise mila kunis. the producers know they will have to create a similar buzz to the first one and a guaranteed way of doing this would be to bring spiderman in, seriously it would bring the roof down for all us fanboys and i would bet money on it…………….just not yet, marvel will be know thinking ahead to at least no. 3 or 4 and currently sony own the rights (money talks) so there is no rush just yet especially as they have 5 or 6 charecters they can bring in over the next few years, there will be at least one more huge charecter in no.2 though coz an ant and a wasp aint gonna get the general public excited, for me its a toss up between ms marvel, black panther and hugo strange, with scarlet witch, quicksilver, luke cage iron fist, vision and the sub-mariner distant outsiders, my money is on ms marvel (please god let it be charlise theron) to be a captain of shield who gets turned into a superhuman during the movie and saves the day, she can be updated to be called captain marvel and it means that they dont have to do another film on top of iron man, cap a, thor and ant man in the next 2-3 yrs, on top of this i would hope that don cheadles war machine would be in it as well because that would divesify the cast more and it would make more sense in that universe (if your fighting against an alien armada with 6 people would u not call up your soldier best mate whos got the same rocket suit as you?) so thats four extra characters a more balanced cast and u only had to make one difficult origin movie, if they do go for others (and they will eventually) i would cast;
clarke gregg (if hes not still alive, as i suspect) as vision
djimoun hounsou (only possible choice) as black panther
daniel day lewis (or hugh laughrie, or colin farrel) as hugo strange
luke cage- terry crews
iron fist- some martial arts guy lol
scarlet witch- carey mulligan, mila kunis
quiksilver- anton yelchin (alex pettyfer, jamie bell)
sub-mariner- the rock (aceeeeee)
All things aside save for appearance, i think Joe Manganiello fills the bill. He has a commanding presence and wears a goatee just fine. Put in a little gray and voila, Stephen Strange.
My choice is Liam Nesson. His while Ra’s Al Ghul look fits perfectly. http://www.fillthepart.com/Parts/doctorstrange
No…almost every actor on this list is just wrong. First off, we remove all actors who have already played a comic book character. That removes Routh, Norton, and Neeson. Second, remove all the terrible actors that are only on this list because they are over 35 and have facial hair. That leaves John Cusack. He would be decent, but theres better options. Justin Bartha, Clive Owen, Ben Foster, James Purefoy, Zachary Quinto, Joseph Fiennes(not to be confused with his older brother) all would be better choices.
NPH! Yes, I am talking Neil Patrick Harris. I think he could rock it.
I think either Johnny Depp, Patrick Dempsey, or Edward Norton would be a great choice for Doctor Strange. Its been awhile since I ve seen Depp play a really serious role that it would take for this role. Dempsey has that look and demeanor of a doctor (obviously). But I think the extra little bit that makes doctor strange who he is may be bring him up a little n his career as an actor. But that’s if the script is good. Norton would be good because he was already in the illusionist and played the part very well. He has that slight look of mystery to him. With a hint of child like curiosity. But when you allow him to put his professional seriousness into a role and its as well written script. He can knock it out of the park.
John Hunter you fail to list THE actor that was born to play this role. I nominate Jim Caviezal. He’s the right age, has dark good looks, and is a very good actor. The scene in Count of Monte Cristo, where he gets out of the hot air ballon in the long coat, wearing a medallion, and almost the exact same facial hair as Strange is uncanny. It’s like he channeled Strange in that scene and he didn’t say a word.
I think J. Depp would be a marvelous Dr.S. but I think he would be a bit expensive. Someone suggested Jim Caviezal (sp?) would be a great choice. HE looks the part, is a talented actor and has excellent stage presence. Viggo Mortenson is my number one pic, though I think he would be too expensive to obtain.
Oh,Jeremy Irons should also be considered. Although I still see Claus Von Bulow when I see him. He has the “man of mystery” part down pat.
How about Andrew Lincoln?
I say Edward Norton or John Cusack! I’m kinda leaning more towards John Cusack though because Edward Norton already did a marvel hero even if he didn’t get to play as the Hulk in The Avengers.
I say go for Edward Norton or John Cusack!
Leaning more towards John Cusack though because Edward Norton has already played as a known Marvel hero even if he didn’t get to play the Hulk in The Avengers.
Josh Brolin
How about Dominic Cooper? He’s young enough, he’s definitely got that darkly handsome thing going, also he’s a known actor, but most likely not a high-priced one (something studio execs like), even though he’s British, he does American veracular well. The movies I’ve seen him in (Mamma Mia notwithstanding),I think he’d be good. And he’s kinda sorta done a Marvel movie already–he was Howard Stark in Captain America.
