84. The Machinist (2004) - Brad Anderson

The Machinist (2004) - Brad AndersonAn industrial worker who hasn't slept in a year begins to doubt his own sanity Christian Bale took method acting to a whole new level in The Machinist, losing an amazing 60 pounds (crazy) for an independent movie that would probably only be seen by a handful of people. But it's so effective, you believe that his character Trevor Reznik is on the bring of sanity and ready to fall off at any given moment. He tells us he hasn't slept in a year and boy do we believe it. The Machinist is about guilt and how heavy it falls on every one of us. It can manipulate us and never leave our grasp until it has sucked all the energy out of us. The Machinsit is the much Hitchcockian film I have seen that wasn't directed by the man himself (including the many remakes of his work). The score from Roque Banos is so Bernard Hermann esque that along with the cinematgraphy and directing style of Anderson, it just screams out Hitchcock. Great movie with some top notch performances from Bale and Jennifer Jason Leigh. One of the those independent movies that creep up on you every now and again that you have a great time watching.
