As the old saying goes: "Dying is easy, comedy is hard." You know what's even harder? Winning an award as a comedic filmmaker. Though some of the most memorable and beloved movies ever made are comedies, a comedy filmmaker can pretty much be resigned to the fact that he or she will never win an Oscar or other top film awards. While TV awards often recognize comedy, rarely can a comedy film have a fair shot at winning major awards against acclaimed dramas. As a result, many great comedy directors and writers have been nominated for little or no Oscars, BAFTA Awards, Directors Guild Awards, Writers Guild Awards, and so on. Even comedy filmmaker icons like Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Jerry Lewis, and Blake Edwards never won major awards for writing or directing, though they later received many honorary or lifetime achievement awards.
