Angelina Jolie: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

4. Lara Croft - Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)

Computer games and films are very different media. One relies on a player to create a story through extensive input and interaction, while in the other the story already exists and the film succeeds on how well it is told through the characters. This is one of the reasons why video game adaptations so rarely succeed - and there are few more obvious examples of this than the first Tomb Raider film. Based on the characters from the series of Core Design video games, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider has a convoluted plot involving planetary allignment, the Illuminati and the poetry of William Blake. Archaeologist Lara Croft travels the world searching for the two halves of the Triangle of Life, an ancient power which will grant its owner control over time and space. Directed by Simon West (The Expendables 2), it is notable mainly for the fact that Jolie acts alongside her real-life father Jon Voight, who coincidentally plays her character's father in the film. Along with the Resident Evil series, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider set the template for dumb video game adaptations. The plot is poorly executed, the set-pieces have no real physicality and the characters are decidedly one-dimensional. For all the international recognition it brought her, which aided her subsequent charity work, Jolie is pretty bad here, allowing the tight costumes and fanservice shots to do the talking. It's a classic example of her settling for less than she's capable of doing, and considering how good she can be, that's a heinous crime.
