Marvel takes another big risk following last summer's surprise smash Guardians of the Galaxy, this time adapting the slightly better-known pint-sized superhero known as Ant-Man. With a troubled production history, which saw writer-director Edgar Wright bail amid creative differences with Marvel, there's been a lot of concern over whether the final product simply might fail to live up to its frankly awesome potential. It's fair to say that Ant-Man isn't one of Marvel's best efforts to date, but critics have been warmly receptive to it nonetheless, scoring marginally stronger reviews than Avengers: Age of Ultron. For better or for worse, it's certainly one of the weirdest offerings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and absolutely makes the most of its wacky, off-the-wall premise to present a firm rebuke to the more gritty, grounded comic book movies that Warner Bros. and DC are currently trying to cook up. Ant-Man's got Hollywood excess, a ton of hilarity, some ridiculously enjoyable action beats, and basically a laundry list of moments to make audiences shout, "WTF!?" A lot is thrown at the wall here, and though not all of it sticks, it'll stay lodged firmly in your brain for the foreseeable future nonetheless.
