Anthony Hopkins: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

Serial killers and serious filler.

Hannibal Lecter Anthony Hopkins
Orion Pictures

There was a time when Anthony Hopkins' presence in any film was a fairly good indication of quality. After his breakout performance as Hannibal Lecter, he lent an air of class and majesty to his performances that only the classically trained British actors of a certain age seemed to manage.

Hopkins has a pleasant knack for elevating even mediocre films with his grand presence (see: the original Thor), though even he cannot save some of the dreck he misguidedly decided to appear in (especially recently). Let's hope that his appearance in Ragnarok - which he only decided to do belatedly after reading the story - will help restore a little of his current reputation. He'd managed some of that with Westworld, of course, but given his films this century, he's had a lot to contend with.

If the 1990s was Hopkins' hot streak of awesome films (and performances), then the last decade-or-so has been his regrettable decline. Here's to hoping that he might have a few more awesome performances in him yet...
