I bitch and moan about the worst aspects of the Star Wars prequels (not the original trilogy, for those films are untouchable and totally perfect. Only blasphemers denounce the first three!), but to compile a documentary of fans completely sticking it to the source of the greatest pop cultural phenomenon of all time (probably)? A little harsh perhaps?
Despite messing up many times with the new Star Wars flicks, spawning some appalling extra-textual material and seemingly going for cash over quality a fair few times you’ve got to credit Lucas for his incredible vision and genius in delivering the magic of Star Wars. It’s that difficult point: when does the product Star Wars cease to be the possession of the artist and pass into the hands of the fans? Who has power here? Will a documentary full of people slagging off Jar Jar Binks really achieve anything, as funny as that might be?
Imagine how amazing the new trilogy could have been had the movies been directed by Christopher Nolan or Darren Aronofsky or David Fincher, i.e. if they had been the dark, dramatic, intelligent cinema the trilogy deserved and if Lucas had the presence of mind to step back and admit he was not the master of all aspects of his film.
Coming up with the Star Wars story is enough creative work for a lifetime; to tarnish that legacy with three children’s movies (I, II, III) is unforgivable.
Lucas should admit publicly that he failed and offer to remake the movies.
You people are all crazy. All 6 of the Star Wars films are fantastic. The original trilogy is superior, but that does not stop the prequel trilogy from still being better than any other movies ever made!
Oh absolutely, anything Star Wars in my rose-tinted view is fantastic, but there are uncomfortable flaws and faults in the recent prequels. You’ve just got to make sure that you ignore the irritant offenders – bad acting, duff dialogue, Jar Jar Binks, etc. – and immerse yourself in the incredible multiverse of intergalactic dreams.
He fucked up the “Return of the Jedi” badly making it a childrens movie with all those cute little teddybears beating the crap out of the empires war merchandice (I could shoot the lot can’t stand them – they didi it destroyed that movie) and those rubber-mask-pig-guards that Jabba has – they are badly made. That one should be redone – by the way do them all – the original trilogy first – the story is too vague – Luke becoming a Jedi “just like that”, bad acting, Yoda being a joke the first time Luke encounters him (like he has never seen a pocket lamp like Lukes and becomes “so fascinated” by it and please do give the wookies another language. Well theres more but A lot of the films are really great too – I don’t find the last ones (episode 1-3) bad – they are better than 4-6 only anakin skywalker is anoying like helle in all three. … greetings erling1000

Our intention is certainly not to “stick it to” George Lucas. We too have a great deal of respect for what he has created, and as you say “credit is due”. For this reason, the film will focus on a balanced discussion and critique of the Star Wars Universe, the phenomenon of its fandom and the dichotomy of its relationship with Lucas. For this reason, we certainly intend for the commentary to delve much deeper than Jar Jar…

Im always amazed at people who think the new Star Wars movies are good. First of all they are not even the same story as the old trilogy. The only things that are similar are some names. Lucas IMO has become some kind of new age liberal, and I think thats obvious from the force being turned into organic moronchlorians. The spiritual aspect of the force “enegy field that surrounds us, and binds the galaxy together”, has been turned into bla. Virgin births dont cut it with me either, it could have been a-lot better if Anakins father was a deceased star pilot. Anakin was also to young in the first one, Lukes age would have made more sence, and that pod race was borring. Hayden was terrible as Anakin, and Lucas completly miss directed Ewan, and Ian, if thats even possible, Lucas managed it though. Obi-Wan should have been the fierce wise warrior, and Yoda should have just a wise teacher. Watching that digital Yoda fight was cringworthy, and stupid Yoda couldent even close the deal with two siths. Digital Yoda’s face was annoying. Bring back the doll. Yoda and Mace took away the character of Kenobi, and made the story incoherant. If you listen to the talks Obi-wan has with Luke, and Yoda in to OT you will realize we have been juked. I agree with the poster above, that Lucas should admit he was being kooky, and redue the movies. Please dont direct them though buddy, you killed Indiana Jones as well. Aliens!!? Good grief. Liberal kookyness.
I am not a Star Wars freak but I do enjoy the movies. Not a big fan of the prequels because they are all computer generated. I think that is fuckin’ lazy. However…to go back and fuck up the original films by putting so much computer generated graphics into it. And replacing Sebastion Shaw in VI with Hayden Christiansen is a slap in the face to Shaw. There should be a law against fucking up masterpieces. What if Paul McCartney redid Sgt Peppers and added a bunch of new digital studio trickery? It would suck. And I agree that the last Indiana Jones movie was stupid. Aliens?….Fuckin’ Aliens?!?!?!?! If Lucas makes anymore he needs to make them the way he made the first 3.
To me, all discussion about the movies after the first, Episode 4, is academic. My first love was the first movie and will always be. I liked the other two of the original trilogy and could barely stomach the rest, but the first is perfection in my book. Which is why I hate, hate, hate the little “improvements” that Lucus stuck in. I hate the big additions, like Jabba the Hutt at docking bay 94, and the little additions, like Greedo’s laser shot ricocheting off the wall next to Hans’ head. All those things just ruined the film. That’s not to say I don’t want to see things cleaned up with better technology, but the content should remain the same.
