Ava DuVernay Will Direct DC's New Gods

Best. Announcement. EVER.

New Gods Ava Duvernay
DC Comics

Hot on the heels of directing A Wrinkle in Time, Ava DuVernay - who also directed Selma and produced 2016's acclaimed Netflix documentary, 13th - is set to enter the world of DC Comics, so say Variety.

The director won't be entering any normal world however, but rather a fourth one, created by renowned comic book writer, artist and all around legend Jack Kirby. Titled New Gods, the film will be set in the DCEU and will centre around the worlds of Apokolips and New Genesis, two planets diametrically opposed to the other and each complete with their own colourful cast of characters, including the infamous Darkseid, who was referenced in last year's Justice League.

Featuring the likes of Mister Miracle, Big Barda, Granny Goodness and Orion, Kirby's series was revered for its vision and lauded for its heroes. There isn't a comic, arguably, that has influenced the DC Universe as much as his, and if any series - or director - were to galvanise Warner Bros. flagging superhero franchise, it would be a DuVernay directed New Gods.

Kirby's world has most recently found renewal in the pages of Tom King and Mitch Gerads' Mister Miracle (a personal favourite, here at the WhatCulture office), and while the film is more likely to be an ensemble than one that focuses solely on the misadventures of Scott Free and Big Barda, one can only hope that it'll be one of the many comics that'll go on to inspire its story.

In any case, here's hoping that the New Gods will be boom-tubing to cinemas sooner, rather than later.
