Avengers: Infinity War is finally out, and while fans take the next few days to pick their collective jaws off the floor, it's fair to say that Marvel's most ambitious project ever has more than lived up to the hype. It is sensational - the epitomisation of not just the ten year history the franchise is able to boast, but also the comic book genre as a whole.

Tragic, compelling, heartbreaking and hilarious in equal respects, Infinity War just plain gets what comic book storytelling is all about. It owes its success to the work of its predecessors - absolutely - but directors Anthony and Joe Russo and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely must surely be commended for their accomplishment; to bring together ten years worth of storylines, performances and genres in the way they've done is, quite simply, phenomenal - a testament to their talents as auteurs as well as to all the stars who managed to make it all happen in the first place.

Infinity War has already achieved a level of salience no one has quite comprehended just yet, and while Marvel's films have never lacked urgency, pathos or importance, the weight with which this particular one carries itself is unmatched by its contemporaries.
