BOX OFFICE: Plummet continues.... down 11% from 2006

The Super Bowl weekend is a notoriously bad one for the U.S. Box Office, but the figures this weekend have to be seen as a big disappointment. Business is down yet again, this time at a massive 11% from this time last year.

messengers_spotlight.jpgThe Super Bowl weekend is a notoriously bad one for the U.S. Box Office, but the figures this weekend have to be seen as a big disappointment. Business is down yet again, this time at a massive 11% from this time last year. After Night at the Museum, Stomp the Yard and Epic Movie... it's the turn of the supernatural movie The Messengers to be the latest critically panned movie to top the weekend estimates. The movie raked it $14.5 million over the weekend, which is about average for the horror movie these days that doesn't involve "Saw" in it's title. Trying to capitalize on the female audience who wish to avoid the Super Bowl was the comedy Because I Said So which came in at second with a $13 million gross. Night at the Museum just doesn't want to leave the Box Office, and it's huge profit taking had to have been a big factor in Shawn Levy getting The Flash gig. The Jennifer Garner comedy Catch and Release alarming dropped 65% and is nowhere to be seen in the top 10 and proves that my questionning of Garner's ability to lead a movie was probably correct. 2 February 2007 (Sunday Estimates) Rank Title Weekend Gross 1. The Messengers (2007) $14.5M $14.5M 2. Because I Said So (2007) $13M $13M 3. Epic Movie (2007) $8.22M $29.4M 4. Night at the Museum (2006) $6.75M $225M 5. Smokin' Aces (2007) $6.32M $25M 6. Stomp the Yard (2007) $4.2M $56M 7. Dreamgirls (2006) $4.05M $92.8M 8. Laberinto del Fauno, El (2006) $3.6M $21.7M 9. The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) $3.1M $157M 10. The Queen (2006) $2.71M $45.5M source - box office mojo, imdb
