Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, The Great Gatsby is set on the US East Coast in the 1920s, and sees DiCaprio attempt to win the affections of Daisy, his childhood sweetheart. Around 1,700 films were submitted to the prestigious 11-day event, and that was later whittled down to around 50. Half of the entries are in the race for the coveted Golden Palm and the other half will compete in a section called Un Certain Regard, which highlights new talent. One of the most famous festivals in the world, Cannes was first held after the Second World War, in 1946. The festival is famed for launching numerous film-makers into the international spotlight, such as Reservoir Dogs director Quentin Tarantino. Steven Spielberg will head the festival jury, and Amelie star Audrey Tautou will host the opening and closing ceremonies. Jerome Salle's film Zulu, starring Oscar winner Forest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom, will bring proceedings to a close on May 26.
