Captain Marvel Finally Hires Directors (And Thankfully One's Female)

Mississippi Grind team reuniting for MCU's first female solo.

It almost feels like years since Brie Larson was announced as the - not entirely unexpected - lead for Marvel's first female-led solo MCU movie. Since then we've seen precious little from the team behind the movie (mostly because there apparently wasn't much of one), aside from Inside Out writers Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman being brought in to write.

Finally, we've now got word of who is directing, as Marvel have hired Mississippi Grind's Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who have previously also worked together on Sugar, It's Kind Of A Funny Story and Nelson. So it's another out of left-field choice for Marvel, as they hire what is ostensibly an indie comedy pair for a tent-pole superhero release.

Well, hiring weird worked with the Russos...

Variety say Marvel met with multiple candidates - and the pair themselves met with the bosses a number of times - and wanted the script to be in the right shape before a director was signed. This hire, then, is a big step forward for the project for what else it represents.

We don't yet know what sort of origin story we're going to get, considering there were some rumours that Marvel wanted to avoid the traditional story of girl meets alien thanks to how close it is to Green Lantern's movie origin. But they've got a good team of talent there to put the pieces together.
