Charlize Theron Wants To Take CITIES OF REFUGE

Would star as “a female investigator brought in to solve a brutal murder and kidnapping in which things aren’t what they seem” in an original crime thriller from first time writer Brandon Willer.

Since winning the ultimate golden statue for her remarkably committed performance in 2003's Monster, South African born beauty Charlize Theron has certainly suffered the post-Oscar winning curse or blip that for whatever reason happens to an incredible number of leading ladies these days. There was the horribly misjudged attempt to make her into a Milla Jovovich or Kate Beckinsale like action hero in Aeon Flux and Hancock that didn't work out, or appearing in her then partner's flop Battle in Seattle and another flop in Guillermo Arriaga's The Burning Plain, and although she has given good performances in The Road and In The Valley of Elah... she has threatened to become somewhat as an afterthought. Her only notable screen presence has been the Dior ads! Recently she seems to have made a conscience effort to turn that all around beginning later this year with Jason Reitman's Young Adult (which could be a return to Oscar recognition!) before next year taking the incredibly showy part of the Wicked Queen in Snow White and the Huntsman (where she will be compared and scrutinized with Julia Roberts' version of the character that hits in the same year) and a part in her favourite filmmaker's movie, Ridley Scott's Prometheus. Not only that but there's the small case of the Mad Max movie for George Miller that would put her opposite Tom Hardy that all being well will shoot next year! Very quickly she is going to be all over our screens and I'm not surprised she is wanting to keep the momentum going. Deadline reports that Theron is cooking up a deal to star and produce Cities of Refuge, a crime thriller based on an original script by newcomer Brandon Willer where she would star as €œa female investigator brought in to solve a brutal murder and kidnapping in which things aren€™t what they seem.€ Ok... so perhaps it sounds like the kind of generic thriller movie Hilary Swank has done a thousand times post-Oscar and that haven't done much for her career either, but it's too early to say how the wind will blow on this one and at least it's a leading role in an American movie, something she hasn't had in a while. Inferno Entertainment have optioned the book and Benderspink and Tower Hill Productions are producing.
