Cloverfield 2 Is Coming In Two Months (And Already Has A Trailer)

J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot kept that one under wraps.

J.J. Abrams evidently used all the fan and media attention surrounding Star Wars: The Force Awakens to go ahead and slyly put together a sequel to Cloverfield without anyone noticing. A trailer dropped with Michael Bay's new action thriller 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi as it debuted in the States, and the release date for the movie is stunningly only two months away. Take a look at the teaser below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guGBUaxtwxE&feature=youtu.be Abrams describes it as a "blood relative" of Cloverfield, and the scenario finds Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim Vs The World), John Goodman (Monsters University) and John Gallagher, Jr (HBO's The Newsroom) living in an underground bunker, hiding from some unseen menace overhead. Evidently, it gets too much for Winstead, who breaks out and assumedly finds one or several Cloverfield monsters. It's a solid move to step away from the found footage format, as Abrams and co. have probably realised that as a sub-genre it's grown increasingly stale over the years. The first Cloverfield (way back in 2008) was responsible for bringing the gimmick into the blockbuster realm and expanding its popularity with young filmmakers (somewhat annoyingly), so it is vaguely shocking that the sequel doesn't adopt the same technique. Abrams classic clandestine approach to cinema has yielded a fresh surprise, all too rare in this age of spoilers and 24/7 internet commentary and scooping. The film has been anticipated by fans of the original for some time, and it's nice to finally have it see the light of day. 10 Cloverfield Lane, as it's known, is released on 11 March.
