David Cronenberg does a page 1 re-write of THE MATARESE CIRCLE

David Cronenberg was chatting to the Toronto Star this week when he revealed that his next movie, the adaptation of Robert Ludlum's non-Bourne thriller The Matarese Circle which is set to film this year with Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington in the leading roles is going through a page one re-write. According to Cronenberg, the draft handed in by 3:10 to Yuma and Wanted scribes Derek Haas and Michael Brandt was not to the liking of the studio or indeed Cronenberg himself, so he has taken it upon himself to write it. He also explained he is writing his script with the two Hollywood icons in mind...

"Usually when I write, I don't visualize the characters, because I want them to have a life of their own, but in this case I am writing it specifically for these two actors. Tom and I get along very well. I was at his house in L.A. a couple of weeks ago, and he's very excited."
Well it sucks about Brandt and Haas because they are good guys and I've enjoyed their scripts to date but Cronenberg always has a very distinct and personal vision behind each and every one of his projects. And there is no-one better writer for Cronenberg to work with than Cronenberg himself (Videodrome, Scanners and The Brood were all written and directed solely by him).
