As we reported in the summer, Warner Bros. made a big move for director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves, the duo responsible for multiple films in the Harry Potter franchise to adapt Stephen King’s most celebrated novel The Stand into a two film sci-fi horror blockbuster. Warner Bros. were so determined to land Yates, they flew him out to the States just one day after the London premiere of the final Harry Potter film in July and sold him on this package.
Yates said yes, Kloves was quickly brought on as writer and the duo were set to work the rest of this year on preparing The Stand Part 1 (or 2) to shoot in 2012 for a release 2013. All seemed hunky dory, except last month Deadline broke the news that Ben Affleck had now been offered the job of bringing The Stand to the big screen with no mention of Kloves or Yates. What happened?
Collider managed to track down Yates and put the question to him;
“I was offered The Stand. I love The Stand, I read it when I was a kid, it was one of my favorite books when I was growing up, I love Stephen King, I think he’s a remarkable writer. And coming out of Potter, you wanna work with an author who has the same reach as a Jo Rowling, and frankly Stephen King does. My issues though were about the adaptation. I wanted to work with Steve Kloves, Steve Kloves wanted to work with me, we were both committed to doing it, but in that time it took to let go of Potter and to think about how we would tackle the adaptation, we both decided that it wasn’t for us, so we left it. We sort of withdrew basically.”
They quit basically when the undertaking of bringing The Stand films to life became too overwhelming. They of course aren’t the first to have suffered this problem. J.J. Abrams was once keen on bringing King’s other sci-fi/horror epic The Dark Tower to the big screen but after spending much more time on it (around two years) he too came to the conclusion that it was simply too daunting a task.
Yates continues;
“What I love about King’s work and what I love about The Stand is the fact that Stephen King really puts you into these people’s lives, and you see the world from a very intimate human level, which normally is something I love. But we felt this pressure to make these super tentpole movies with this material, and the things that you get in Potter—which are these extraordinary episodes of action—they didn’t exist in the material, and I was worried I wouldn’t be able to deliver the kind of movie that ultimately the studio was hoping to get from this material. I could see making a miniseries from it, a really interesting, intricate, layered, enjoyable long-burn of a miniseries, I could see that, but what was missing for me were the big movie moments in the material, the big set pieces.”
Clearly then if The Stand was a t.v. mini-series again he would have been all over it but he struggled to see the cinematic way of telling the story and he bailed.
So where does this leave The Stand currently? Well Warner Bros. have made it clear they want a film and that it’s Ben Affleck’s job if he wants it but we’ve had no update on the project in almost a month (to be fair, Affleck is probably re-reading the novel and that takes a few weeks) but he’s ALWAYS turned down the franchise gig when it comes to directing. But if he were to say yes, he would need to find a writer to help him bring the novel to the screen and all this takes time.
The Stand is a post-apocalyptic novel where a plague nicknamed Captain Trips has caused mass devastation to the planet, wiping out almost everyone. The novel focuses on the rag-tag group of survivors who share dreams of a mysterious evil being and they team-up, forming a community, to try and rid them of it. It’s an awesome novel and birthed a pretty cool mini-series in the 90s with Gary Sinise but it was always limited by it’s medium and with a big scale budget and someone as resourceful as Affleck, the possibilities are truly endless.
Affleck will be busy on Argo until at least late-summer so he if he does sign on we are probably about 12 months away from when filming could conceivably begin. He’s a helluva storyteller and working from one of the finest stories from a MASTER storyteller in King is a very exciting prospect…

Why do they need to remake a movie that was fantastic first time round with the cast they had. There is nothing wrong with that one and I WILL NOT watch a remake of it. Seen too many remakes of Stephen King movies (and others like Alfred Hitchcock) and it has never been good. Make one of his other books into a movie like “under the dome”.
I sooooo totally agree !!!
There are sooo many good books out there that can be put on the big screen and these director all they keep doing is REMAKE after remake… come on now, lets think outside the box. King has some other awesome books, pick one.
When I saw the mini-series I thought then that it would be so much better on a big screen with a bigger budget-it just looked cheap. Yates needed to think outside the box on this one.
Great casting? Laura San Giacomo as Nadine? Nuf said.
Ditto, Bobby….. Nadine and Harold were both miscast, I thought.
I have to agree, the first movie was pretty darn good for the resources that were available at the time. But this is my favorite book of all time, and if it’s done well with today’s resources, I’ll be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited!!!!!!
I agree that considering the resources at the time, the mini-series was awesome. But, Id love a remake now! The resources are there to make it as equally scary as the book, which the mini-series failed to instill. If youve read the book, you know Im right.
Why can’t everyone leave Stephen King alone on Face Book and let him do whatever he wants with his movies. He wrote the books and they were turned into movies so when he is ready to make other movies with the books that are not yet, He will be the judge. He is very brilliant and he will always have reasons behind his thinking. How about finding another author to talk about.
I can hardly understand what you’re talking about or what is has to do with Hollywood’s plans for doing The Stand. And where (and how) does Facebook come in? King is not on facebook. There is a SK fan page on FB, but he has nothing to do with it.
I would love to see the Dark Tower series come to life!!!! Please!!! It would, if directed and written properly, surpass the Harry Potter movies!!
Movies on the Dark Tower series would be brilliant. Definitely be a big moneyspinner for anyone with the courage to back it. Would have to be done really well though.
I agree, the gunslinger would be awesome to watch!!!!!
Actually, The Gunslinger would be boring to watch. Go ahead and re-read the book. It’s a great book, but as a film, it would be a whole lot of walking and no dialogue. The first two books would have to be merged with the first being mostly flashbacks, or starting at the way station or something. That’s if it were to be done, which I don’t think it should. Great books, and I’m sure they could land a great director and great actors, but it will never live up to the demands of the fans. They should maybe finish The Talisman as that has apparently been in production for ten years now.
That’s an idea, why don’t someone start making his books a mini series as well as movies or visa versa??
Tackle the Tower
Best series of books I have ever read!!!!
the stand was a mini-series not a movie
Originally it was a movie in two parts, it was just broadcast on TV as a mini-series.
Yes, it was a mini-series produced for television. Designed, written, shot, edited and broadcast as four 2-hour installments. Everyone who stobbornly insists that it’s a movie, doesn’t know what they are talking about.
I think that if the movie is re-made.. Ben Affleck should have no major role in the movie.. But maybe bring in Stephen Dorff in place of Ben Affleck.. I think that director Taylor Hackford would do a more than amazing job directing it.. Just my opinion!!
I loved the mini series but it seemed to die in the end and was a bit anti climatic.I hope they can really do the book justice.
Or they could not make it and do the Dark Tower instead!!!
Totally agree!!!!!!
I’d really love to watch a modern day movie/series of King with all the effects, the likes of Lord of the Ring. The stand would come about like contagion (haven’t watched it yet just read the review) all in all I wouldn’t mind any of King’s work as long as it is done justice as I have the reading experience-nothing better
They always make me nervous when they screw around with Stephen Kings Books. They never get the real feel of the book which are a thousand times better than any movies they make. Just seems they can’t get all that into the big screen.
I don’t know, I think The Green Mile nailed it pretty much on the head. And Shawshank was nearly verbatim. Basically, King needs to just let Frank Darabont make all of his movies. Not Ron Howard; he will focus too much on making it epic looking and fail to keep the storyline intact, but the music will be awesome. Not J.J. Abrams. Yes, Lost was a great show, but not because of Abrams. He didn’t write or direct 99% of the show. The Dark Tower is just too big and full of too many expectations to be on the big screen. A mini series would be too short and edited. I could totally see it working as a long term mini series, like V, but with a bigger budget and NOT on a network. Throw it on A&E.
Dark Towers series would be amazing! With the special effects they now have it would be such great movies! (not like some of the made for TV movies of the past that they killed of Kings) I would love to see Blane the train, and the caves, and wolves, lots of great characters to come to life!
Call me crazy, but as a hardcore gamer and massive
fan of Mr. King’s works, I think the perfect format for a story like The Dark Tower would be in a video game, like some of the better titles like Fallout or Red Dead Redemption…you could finish it at your own pace, and not have big chunks of story missing for the sake of brevity.
I don’t think they should remake The Stand either!! I think the book that should be made in a movie would be The Talisman!!It would make an AWESOME movie!! Or even the Dark Tower Series!! Don’t remake one that is already classic!
The real question is “Should a remake be made?” Was something wrong with the mini-series that warrants a remake? No. Well written, super casting, great drama… all a new version can do is throw money and special effects at something that was great to begin with. Stop remaking great films as bad films and make something new.
‘
Im sorry, but am I the only one who hated the original mini series? Am I the only same person willing to say that Mick Garris’s visions of Stephen King novels are so overly cheesy that you can’t even watch the screen?! I was TERRIFIED when Larry and Nadine were crossing the tunnel in the book- but in the movie I was laughing at the way the make up effects looked.. They were supposed to be bloated and gross and dripping.. “Well let’s just throw some generic corpse makeup on they’ll look fine…”
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE MAKE A REAL VERSION OF THE STAND and THE DARK TOWER.. Not some made for NBC or A&E garbage. And stop letting Mick Garris anywhere near these scripts.
I loved the mini-series of The Stand. I didn’t like that they had to combine some of the characters but I understand that they couldn’t possibly put all of them in there, so they mingled them. If they do intend to make a movie, I only hope that they do it in a way they can tell the whole story. There were so many backgrounds they had to leave out of the mini-series.
Leave the books to stand (no pun intended) on their own. ALL of his work is magnificent as-written. If they insist on making Mr. King’s books into movies, choose a new one, not rehash one that was already put on-screen (large or small). With today’s technology, The Dark Tower Series could be amazing with the right casting/directing.
Why are they want to remake The Stand? It was a great as it was. Leave well enough alone.
i am a huge king fan, a big fan of the stand mini series as well as the book, along with the dark tower series, and all the stories that connect to the tower series. There is lots of stories there to play with and to link to that series. Do i think either should be a big budget movie? No. For many of the reasons others have mentioned, but also look at the state of television today. Not to much going on there. So if you are going to put them on tv, give them to someone who will do justice to both stories. Let amc do them, walking dead is a great show, they focus on the characters as well as giving you action and gore. hell on wheels could go the same way. Give them to amc, and let amc make them the classics they should be, give them the budget and do it right. Anyone else does it? It will be done wrong and i know i won’t watch.
