Lionsgate announced today that they have come to an agreement with developers Deep Silver to make the Dead Island movie that has been threatened ever since that infamous trailer hit in February and set the Internet alight with buzz.
Indeed just a few days after it was unleashed, we heard that Sean Daniel, a twenty year producing vet behind National Lampoon’s Animal House, The Mummy and The Wolfman, had bought the rights to the game for his recently established The Sean Daniel Company. However Deep Silver were quick to say that talk was premature and they were ready to turn down frantic offers back then;
“We are looking for quality above all else for a movie based on ‘Dead Island.’ We want to do it the right way as film realizations of games (or vice versa) usually fail to deliver what the fans were looking for. We will not go down this route with ‘Dead Island.’ Deep Silver profoundly believes in the quality and value of its Dead Island IP.”
Today though the rights have definitely been sold and to Lionsgate, and a familiar name, Sean Daniel, will still be responsible for bringing the video game to the big screen as he will act as one of the producers alongside Stefan Sonnenfeld, Jason Brown and Sarah Perlman.
Lionsgate had this to say:
“Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck. This is exactly the type of property we’re looking to adapt at Lionsgate – it’s sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential.”
Let me get this straight, basically Hollywood is making a movie based off a video game trailer that had almost nothing to do with the game and is not the game itself. I guess I am not surprised, considering that after the trailer was released, it garnered so much hype that the game was never able to live up too when it opened to mostly mediocre reviews. For those who have played Dead Island – is it good that the movie is being made based off the trailer and not the actual game, or should it really be the other way around. Plus is there a place for Dead Island in a world where we already have soooooooo many zombie movies and t.v. shows?

Honestly, I think it’s good that the movie is being made on the trailer and not the actual game. Mainly because, after playing the game, there are so many things that you can do and movie could only select one of the many decisions you make throughout the game. Plus, the trailer shows the “What Could Have Been” that the game never lived up too. In my opinion the movie is better off using the trailer than the game itself. Also, I hope that the movie will give a story and plot for the family in the trailer that I was hoping the game would do but never did. I have somewhat high expectations for the movie and can’t wait until it’s released!
im reading the book and it is amazin, i hope the movie is based on the book
plus, we dont have enough GOOD zombie games and movies!!!!!!!
i hope its not based on the family becuz a family in a horror is generic but the main characters, in the book with their individual stories would be better than a family with a little kid, that would limit the violence
