The new trailer for the Judge Dredd reboot “Dredd” starring Karl Urban as the titular Judge has just hit the interweb. First impressions? Gareth Evan’s The Raid….set in the future.
The teaser isn’t giving us much but the one Judge and one rookie taking on a locked down tower block full of bad guys is very reminiscent of Evan’s recent martial arts extravaganza. The concept of basically locking your lead into a gauntlet certainly worked well for the low budget martial arts film but how will this translate to a big budget sci-fi thriller? Judging from the trailer, it certainly seems to be action packed. One thing that struck me instantly was how much better the shooting looks compared to Judge Dredd, which gives me hope that the Lawgiver will be a more epic weapon than in the ill-conceived Stallone version.
The real question is how Urban will stand up as Dredd. So far all his lines are trailer fodder; meaningless one liners that give no indication of performance. His gruff voice certainly feels forced but that could just be the aforementioned dialogue and in more meaty scenes we may get a more nuanced performance.
Outside of The Raid style scenario is a drug problem revolving around a new drug, Slow Mo. Slow Mo makes the user’s perception of time slow down to crazy speeds and seems to be an important mechanic in the film. Even in this early trailer there is a dominance of super high frame rate photography. In itself this is nothing new to film, The Matrix made this practically text book for a few years. Still, it has a more photographic feel to it so hopefully it will still be interesting to see.
Still, if I was Pete Travis I would be kicking myself as this seems to me to be one of those rare cases of great minds thinking alike and bad timing. It reminds me of the Kick-Ass/Super situation which unfortunately forced the lower budget Super to being released a year later, making it look like a band-wagon wannabe. In many ways I am glad that Evan’s The Raid made it out first as of the two, Dredd will suffer less from the comparison.

This film went into production before the raid did it is a coincidence. Tabloid journalism knocking something without the facts. http://www.slashfilm.com/dredd-trailer/#more-129969 read this it backs me up
Ripping off the raid???? No it isn’t!!! Dredd was written first and some idiot leaked it….. then the Raid came out recently….hmm interesting coincidence!!!!
This story needs to show both sides of the argument. The Dredd script was written years ago and was leaked on the web. Then quite a while after that The Raid came out…. deduce from that what you will.
Plus this kind of story isn’t completely original anyway considering films made in the past such as Die Hard.
It’s not it was i prodcution before the raid
Well, after waiting for this trailer for ages, I’m now left feeling uninspired.
I had previously doubted Urban had the chin to play Dredd but now I’m doubting whether he has the chops or the requisite balls.
On the plus side, I’d never heard of The Raid before now, it looks terrific so I’ll definitely be checking it out post haste.
Dear Grud, another article written by a person who has no knowledge of Dredd. Comparing it to The Raid, yawn! I’ll let the other fans explain how you are so wrong as I’m off to work now!
Wow. You sir, are an ignorant cock!
If only there was some kind of information facility, let’s call is an ‘internet’, where you could have checked your facts before throwing about what are rather serious allegations.
Serious how? What are the consequences of my article? There are more serious consequences to calling someone an ignorant cock. Like for example, if you had the required balls to say that to someone’s face: consequences.
“as this seems to me to be one of those rare cases of great minds thinking alike and bad timing.” – I never said it wasn’t a coincidence.
My lack of knowledge of Judge Dredd is irrelevant, utterly irrelevant. We are looking at a trailer, a mediocre trailer that makes the film out to be very much like The Raid. Regardless of what came first, whose script came first. The Raid came out first, bad luck Dredd. It’s an unfortunate turn out. I never said they saw The Raid, and then ‘thought oh cool, let’s do that!’ That would involve a production of about 1 month.
The problem with fanboys/girls is that you see the internet as your domain and feel that it gives you power to throw your opinions around like they matter more than other people’s. You might be a Judge Dredd encyclopaedia given the gift life by some geek-god but that doesn’t give you the right to insult people. I’ll tell you now, insulting from a far is about as powerful as a fart. If you have an opinion worth saying say it. If you are gunna have a fan-fit and slag me off and then make a hilarious claim to my article making “serious allegations” then put your head back into your anus now please.
You’re wrong. Dredd was written and in production before the Raid. The Raid should actually be called the “rip-off”. Better luck next time kiddo. Try doing some actual journalism first.
No, moron, your lack of knowledge is VERY relevant. You made a judgement call and got it spectacularly wrong. And worse, you went public with it. You posted an article when you were not aware of the facts. That is piss poor journalism. You just spouted off like a rank and reckless amateur. Your other articles follow the same trajectory.
There is no problem with fanboys, just people who KNOW the facts, and if you had any modicum of integrity you would have done a bit of research (just going to the IMDB page would have sufficed) and got your facts straight.
At the most, at the time of your illiterate trash article, the trialer looked similar to The Raid – at no point did you ever have the evidence or the right to say it is a “rip off”.
What Culture must be really desperate to let you write for them.
“I’ll tell you now, insulting from a far is about as powerful as a fart.”
I don’t know, it seems to have gotten your dander up Moorhose old boy.
You are wrong though. Claiming the film is a rip-off of the Raid, declared beacon-like via tabloid headline is rather ‘cockish’ and says more about you than either films despite your little ‘get-out’ clause planted at the very end of the article. You don’t need to know anything about Judge Dredd to have checked the facts before you published your loud declaration of plagiarism at the head of the piece. Style over content, not good.
Dude you just OWNED _ HOLLY MOLLY!!!!
How on earth is ‘Dredd’ a rip-off of ‘The Raid’ when the script was first drafted back in 2008/09 – a whole three years before anyone even heard of the latter film!? This is typical lazy journalism from someone who knows nothing about the film he’s writing about, the truth of the matter is this film is going to be AWESOME, and all it took was an independent British production company, Indian money, a South African filming location, and a mere $45m… take that Yanks!
So what if Dredd came up with the idea earlier? The Raid came out before Dredd- deal with it! It’s like saying you thought of the wheel, after it has already been invented. Lionsgate have f**ked Dredd and they will be judged.
No, not really. It’s like having schematics for the wheel, showing everyone the schematics and then having someone else release the wheel 2.0 before you get around to creating it. It could be a total coincidence that “The Raid” came out with a similar idea to “Dredd”, but to say that Dredd ripped off The Raid, when the script for Dredd was finished way before the concept of The Raid even existed is utter rubbish. inb4 fanboy, I’ve never heard of Judge Dredd before earlier this year, but I still know how to use google.
The title of this article is misleading: about the film and about the article itself. It is the title that justifies any accusations of ignorant cockerage.
Flipping out at someone on the internet for criticising your work; deriding them because they’re not an industry professional, then petulantly trashing the work of an industry professional yourself? You might be in the film business, but you’re not a professional journalist- there’s a button up above that affords any Tom Dick or Harry the opportunity to enjoy the same platform for their views as you have here. How are the comments of anyone criticising an article with a headline that says something completely different to the text below invalidated by their not holding an NUJ card? We’re all just wankers spouting nonsense, you’ve just got a byline instead of an avatar of Peter Griffin dressed as Boba Fett.
This article is RIPPING OFF OTHER MISINFORMED ARTICLES. I’ve heard journalism is a dying industry, now I know why.
‘My freezy-whip brings all the boys to the yard’.
Wow, so much hate. You can love \ hate Dredd all you want. But the two trailers do look rather similar. Deal with it.
I refer you back nearly 35 years. To a time before “The Raid” was ever thought of. In 1977 Judge Dredd was created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. In Prog 2 of 2000ad, Judge Dredd rode into the lives of every UK citizen and showed how much of a Badass he is by judging Whitey to an island surrounded by constant 200MPH traffic. Skip around 2-400 program, and after the Judge Child story had finished, Judge Dredd and Judge Hershey decided after solving a case to pass time that they would do Random Block Checks. They spent the night doing it and after Dredd Todd away to another crime leaving Hershey with the paperwork.
The Random Block Checks were created IN the Judge Dredd universe. The movie “The Raid” has taken that idea and put martial arts in. Judge Dredd has cleared more Blocks in 35 years, created more entertainment, fright, shock, humor and whitty one liners than a knock off “Guarenteed-No-Sequel” Movie ever will.
If you ever want to review something, or compare it to something else first. I HIGHLY recommend that you do research, retrieve the facts, and make sure that what you’re saying is 100% truth. Also with Judge Dredd and 2000ad having a huge following you are Guarenteed to bump into people like me who can tell you what happens in ONE prog even though I haven’t picked that up for 3 years.
And Dredd 3D is NOT a reboot. It is a completely new movie. There WAS no Judge Dredd movie EVER made, ask any Dredd fan. There was this movie once when Stallone walked about in a golden cock piece, but that wasn’t Dredd.
So before you start saying that this is like “The Raid” go search Dredd, not only to be proven wrong, but so you can enjoy the Zarjazz (2000ad readers will understand that) that is Dredd.
2000ad has the most rich and exotic ideas I’ve ever seen in a comic. Whereas Marvel has Cpt America, Iron Man and Thor that represent them at the moment, and DC have Batman and Superman. 2000ad could make BILLIONS off of their comic characters!
Rogue Trooper, the last Genetic Infantryman alive after the massacre at Nu Earth. Not gonna elaborate more on him.
Robo-Hunter, Sam Slade a 50+ year old Robo Hunter, caught in a space warp and made to be 20 again, to hunt more Robots! Pretty much Blade Runner was invented FROM HIM!
Strontium Dog, a Time-Bounty Hunter, with his mutated eyes that let him see through walls. He travels in time with the Bounty Hunting Company, and capture people with Bounties that have fled that entire TIME ZONE! He even went head to head against DREDD in annual 1992 if I’m correct, I have a signed copy around the house somewhere. He has his sidekick, Wulf, a Nord Viking that was saved by Johnny Alpha (Strontium Dog) and when you watch the Dredd trailer it says “Sternhammer” down the side. That is the name of Wulfs Hammer he always uses!
Then there are small stories, like “Fiends on the Eastern Front” about a German Squad of Vampires that kill Russians! An EPIC tale!
You need to read these things! So now you will hopefully understand why people have snapped at you, what you did was a HUGE insult to us VERY dedicated readers. Dredd holds history, and for hundreds of thousands, including me, I grew up with Dredd! And I’m only 19!
Regards,
Josh Shaw
i think you’ll find that evans was shown the script and offered dredd a long time before he made the raid and any ripping off was probably done by him.
I worked on the original Judge Dredd movie in 1995 at a special F/X production house called Mass.Illusion in Lenox, MA. It was a year long project and we only did the special f/x, not live action (shot in London). I have a couple of original scripts (color coded with changes made during the production) and story boards. I may just put these on Craigslist, so if anyone is interested. Look them up.
whats the big deal, 2 films different stories, different characters different universe. The raid is like a john woo film hard boiled anyway. sure , baddies but let it be. time will tell. Dredd for me a brit, well its like institution stuff like batman. I love dredd, the stallone one was crap yes but the references made it sentimental .
i liked bad company
I love the raid redemption, I’m not sure this dredd will even match it.
I’m sorry Dredd’s fanboy, just a personal opinion.
I love the comments. Horrible journalism with no research or facts gets destroyed by every poster on here then acts like a baby instead of admitting he’s an idiot.
The movie is actually awesome. The beauty of the internet is that any smartass guy can be a “critic”
DROKK!!! Big Jobs!! UNCLE UMPS Candy! AT last Dredd lives in a real film. ABC warriors next? Nemesis, Flesh or recent stories AVATAR? before the AVATAR FILM!!!! THRILL POWER. enough said…..
