Josh Trank is like some sort of magician. Before our very eyes he has transformed the long-gestating Fantastic Four reboot from something that nobody had any hope in and many were actively rooting against into one of the most exciting upcoming superhero movies. What began as a film shrouded in secrecy, which didn't do the usual hype rigmarole of releasing early images and trailers whilst in the middle of production, has turned into something very interesting. Although as Arthur C Clarke will tell you, any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. The director's take on The Fantastic Four is said to be grounded and as realistic as a team that involves a rock man, invisible lady, stretchy dude and guy in fire can be. He's invoked body horror mastermind David Cronenberg as an influence. That, along with a stellar cast including Michael B Jordan, Jamie Bell, Kate Mara and Miles Teller, should have been enough to get people excited. The radio silence from Fox throughout production had people worried, suggesting perhaps they were trying to cover up a film that had gone off the rails. Finally, the first trailer dropped, and had a lot to reassure fans. This weekend saw the second trailer released, and it is really, really good. It gives the first proper look at not only the heroes in action, but the villain along with some more clues about the plot, and seeds for future films.
