Finally A Reason To Be Excited For Pacific Rim 2 - John Boyega Joins As The Lead

TRAITOR!

Pacific Rim 2 John Boyega
Warner Bros. Pictures/Lucasfilm

I never got the hype for on-again-off-again Pacific Rim 2. The first film was totally fine, but what it wasn't was a good show of Guillermo Del Toro strengths - the CGI monster bits were solid, but when we got to garish practical sets it devolved into caricature. Like Duncan Jones with Warcraft or Colin Trevorrow with Jurassic World it felt like a director ticking boxes with allotted moments for "style".

So Pacific Rim 2's been a pretty passive curiosity of mine. People were clamouring for it and I just couldn't see why. Well now I can. Mere weeks after he was erroneously linked to Black Panther, John Boyega has taken the lead in Pacific Rim: Maelstrom (Pacific Rim: Resurgence was taken), suddenly making the whole thing much more exciting. He's playing the son of Idris Elba's character from the first, which feels a bit base, but I'm now willing to give it a shot.

You know Boyega was awesome in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as Finn (he even pulled off a convincing American accent) and the press tour showed he's a genuinely charismatic guy, so this is a great move for the film.
