Previous to 2005 with the release of Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire the movie franchise for J. K. Rowling's books mostly had a lighter tone to them, feeling very family friendly and like there will always be a happy ending. Sure, The Princess Of Azkaban had its moments, but nobody died. This movie marked the turning point in the series where darkness rises and the tone of the movies were changed indefinitely.
Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire was more of a challenge in comparison to the previous three movies as it had a lot more content to work with in the book, being the first one in the series to hit over 600 pages and more than doubling the previous instalments. This included the historic tournament that Hogwarts hosts and the return of the dark lord Voldemort. It was important to visually portray Voldemort correctly as the titular villain with such a fearful and powerful presence surrounding him before even being seen.
