Just when the 3 ¾ inch range of Star Wars action figures were getting too spindly, Hasbro have revealed their plans for a new bigger line of figures aimed at a more adult crowd. Judging from the first images – featuring a very awesome looking Luke Skywalker in X-Wing pilot gear – this new, bigger 6-inch range could be arriving at just the right time, given the Episode 7 hype and the soon to be returning galaxy from far far away (like it ever left).
The first wave is said to include Luke Skywalker, Darth Maul, R2-D2 and a Sandtrooper and retail around $19.99 each. They are set to hit around mid-August and the cooly named ‘Black Series’ will include characters from across the original trilogies.
Derryl DePriest, Hasbro vice president of boys marketing says about the line, ”We consider them the best figures that Hasbro’s ever produced for Star Wars that meets the sensibilities of romancing the character as well as the playability and poseability that fans really appreciate”.
He also commented on the name and design of the new line, “It’s one of the main colours of Star Wars all the way back to the beginning, and it’s the approach that Lucasfilm has taken with their collector-oriented product line. We’re bringing that simplicity and essence and focus on the character now to the toy aisle.”
Also, he seems very aware of who’ll be interested in this new line;’ “Our focus here is the adult collector, the dad,” DePriest says. “We know they have their own generation of youngsters they like to share the adventure with. It can be something for dad, and the 3¾ world can be something for the kids to share.”
I don’t know about you guys, but they had me at Darth Maul. Maybe my Star Wars figure collecting isn’t quite as over as I thought it was. We’ll bring you more on this Black Series line as soon as we hear about it and see the pretty Darth Maul figure that is on its way.
