Iron Man 3 Trailer: 5 Major Talking Points

Marvel's Phase 2 started with a bang this morning as the comic book behemoth released the first trailer for Iron Man 3, hot on the heels of the teaser trailer for the trailer that appeared yesterday. It's big, it's explosive and it has surprising emotional depth for a character who spent most of the Avengers film sarcastically chewing his dialogue and generally being a little bit unlikable for anyone not familiar with the character. This is clearly darker, heavier and more emotionally laden - and though Marvel will no doubt resist such comparisons, there's definitely an element of the Red & Gold Knight Rises here. There's lots going on, but thankfully, Marvel have kept as much aside as they've teased. At this stage it's a little hard to see how Marvel were going to introduce so many new characters into one trailer, and it looks like they've decided against over-stuffing, preferring instead to focus on the Mandarin and Iron Man chiefly, and not trying to shoe-horn in mention of the Extremis, or explicit mentions of Firepower or Coldblood. That would probably have just been a mess. Anyway, the decisions seem to have paid off, and while the trailer starts slow, with its almost cliched superhero in turmoil monologue, the rest of the trailer is an explosive thrill ride, and one that will do exactly what Marvel intended - getting fans' excitement whipped up for the film.
