Marvel’s Phase 2 started with a bang this morning as the comic book behemoth released the first trailer for Iron Man 3, hot on the heels of the teaser trailer for the trailer that appeared yesterday. It’s big, it’s explosive and it has surprising emotional depth for a character who spent most of the Avengers film sarcastically chewing his dialogue and generally being a little bit unlikable for anyone not familiar with the character. This is clearly darker, heavier and more emotionally laden – and though Marvel will no doubt resist such comparisons, there’s definitely an element of the Red & Gold Knight Rises here.
There’s lots going on, but thankfully, Marvel have kept as much aside as they’ve teased. At this stage it’s a little hard to see how Marvel were going to introduce so many new characters into one trailer, and it looks like they’ve decided against over-stuffing, preferring instead to focus on the Mandarin and Iron Man chiefly, and not trying to shoe-horn in mention of the Extremis, or explicit mentions of Firepower or Coldblood. That would probably have just been a mess.
Anyway, the decisions seem to have paid off, and while the trailer starts slow, with its almost cliched superhero in turmoil monologue, the rest of the trailer is an explosive thrill ride, and one that will do exactly what Marvel intended – getting fans’ excitement whipped up for the film.

Someone has either stolen his armour or maybe Tony is controlling it with his mind? I’m guessing that he may be playing around with ways to make his armour more accessible instead of him having to get somewhere to put it on. Look at the Mark 7 in The Avengers – that one flew to him via control bracelets so maybe he is taking it a step further by connecting it to his mind.
He may or may not die, the helmet that Pepper holds may be representational of Ironman’s possible death or she’s just holding it hoping he is ok, after all it doesn’t look like the Mark47 that I’m guessing he will be wearing for most of the film?
I think I may have seen Happy Hogan lying on the floor in a bit of a mess only for a brief second so he might buy it, I’m pretty sure that Downey Jr is contracted in for at least 6 films with options to return so I doubt he will die. May be like you mentioned about Ironman dying in the eyes of the world but Stark actually “retiring” from the armour only to be replaced by WarMachine. It might be WarMachine in future Avengers films but I doubt it with Downey Jr’s popularity and strength as a character. It also looks like the Mark47 that Tony was dragging in the snow at the end of trailer. Who knows, guess we’ll have to wait and see.
I.Can.Not.Wait.
The end of trailer is like the end of TDKR’s trailers. But this is gonna be badass.
I feel like this is going to be an epic that we have yet to see from the Marvel crop of movies. They are taking three of the biggest parts of the Iron Man mythos and molding them into one incredible story. I mean, The Mandarin is finally making an appearance, and, with this inclusion of Aldrich Killian, this has clear influence from Extremis, and I’m sensing some Armor Wars thrown in there too, what with all the other armored folks showing up. This has the potential to be Spider-Man 3, but honestly, the talent that is involved both in front of and behind the camera, I’m thinking this will be more like TDK.
Personally, I love what they are doing with The Mandarin’s voice. It has this disconnected quality to it, a la Anton Chigurgh in No Country for Old Men. I feel like Kingsley is doing something we have never seen from him before.
Ozzy… Shoot to Thrill?? Someone mixing things up there for a major AC/DC fan? :P
Ozzy as in Australian. Not the singer.
I think by Ozzy he was referring to the fact that the AC/DC is Austrailian.
And I think I remember that Tony could control his armor mentally in the Extremis story, although he was wearing it. The Extremis virus and his alteration allowed the suit move at the speed of his thoughts. But I guess they could be taking it a step further…
In trailer the arc reactor behind the iron man writing jitters off. I was on edge in the avengers when he flakes out, thinking they wouldn’t would they noooo they cant kill him. It looks like a fab trailer i really hope Tony stark remains standing at the end of it though!
My first impression was The Golden Avenger Rises. I think this will be a good flick. Judging by the tatoo, maybe Mandarin will get a nod in the 2nd or 3rd Capt. America movie.
I think either some people have only become fans of marvel since the modern movies and are guessing answers here a true marvel fan would know mandarins powers come from his rings and can do pretty much what he likes. I believe he’s controlled one of the iron man suits and kidnapped pepper potts hence tony in bed with her. I’m sorry but some amatuer theories there please read a comic or at least know some history on characters. Well looking forward to this film and seeing how tje storyline coincides with avengers they’ve done it in comics following secret invasion houde of m serieses etc sure they can manage the big screen with marvels influence.
