Not long ago, we were graced with the presence of two of the most exciting trailers I’ve seen in recent years, and both were for the same movie: The Man of Steel. Some will tell you these trailers are boring – oh look, there’s a seagull; oh it’s some rocks, great – these people are ignorant.
If you’re a fan of Superman, I’ll wager that those trailers shook your very foundations. Maybe it’s just hype, I’ve been duped by it before, I’m only human after all, but I can’t fight the excitement that’s bubbling within me for this newest Superman adventure.
Even if you’re not hugely sold on the character, surely you can recognise that there’s something there, right? I mean, Superman, as a character, is over seventy years old, there have been several movies made and believe me, some of them have been terrible, but still he lives on. People still want to see him made flesh. And millions can’t be wrong can they?
Superman means so much, to so many. So much so that when the trailer was first shown at Comic Con, some fans openly wept; finally, a movie viewed Superman in the same way that the fans viewed him. Those trailers are a cathartic validation of our love for the character, and they present us with a lot to be excited about.
So, let me take you through just ten of those very reasons. After all, it’s why I’m here.

If you cry at a unveiling of a comic book character’s movie trailer…then you’re a idiot.
The irony of your chosen name in correlation with the sentiment of this comment is definitely not lost on me.
What compels a person to degrade someone for being passionate about something……unless you are passionate about being an a hole for which I’ll apologize….Nah….I’ll be a jerk to a jerk…..seems fair doesn’t it little Willy???
the name you have here, and what you write..who is the idiot…
Willie, your chosen name discredits EVERYTHING you say. You obviously go on sites and say the same mindless, ignorant, and childish things. You impress nobody but yourself and that’s not saying much about you is it. You’re an angry child. Just know everything you say 2 people makes YOU look bad not US. Your comment shows that you are incapable of emotion Which leads me to ask why on this planet are you a superman fan?????? You obviously have absolutely nothing to relate to with Superman. I really hope someday you can turn yourself around and wake up. (NAMASTE)
Most likely little willie.
Great Article!
I’ve started my countdown, it’s exactly 9months, 22 days and 12 hours before the opening!
My eleventh reason would be Hans Zimmer is scoring!!
Man of Steel will be awesome.
i just can´t wait…this movie will be so great…we´ll see Superman flying again
Thanks for writing the article! Cannot wait for Man of Steel to come out :D Absolutely loveee Superman and Henry Cavill is just gorgeous!
“Some will tell you these trailers are boring – oh look, there’s a seagull; oh it’s some rocks, great – these people are ignorant.

–I didn’t like the trailer (singular…same footage different voice over). Am I less of a Superman fan because of it? No.
The movie will be great, but the trailer…..meh.
I love Henry Cavill, His work on The Tudors and in The Immortals showed me he has great talent. I have said all along he would make a great Superman! I cannot wait for this movie! I agree with your top ten Stuart. Thank you for a very well written article!
Although, I do think that Callum Blue did a pretty decent job as Zod in Smallville!
You misspelled recognize. I have been a fan of Superman for over fifty years. This MAN OF STEEL movie is going to suck! Why you ask; well I am a diehard fan and I couldn’t stand the last movie not because of the story it told or the fact that they gave him a son but because the suit had little superman emblems on it and his hair was parted on THE WRONG SIDE OF HIS HEAD. Now they have some weird design on the suit, darkened the colors and changed the emblem. I know they changed the suit in the comics, I even know WHY they changed it. I don’t care, I would rather they never print another Superman comic or make another movie than have this pretender on the pages or the movie screen! I would much prefer they make a deal with the families go back to the beginning and make a movie about the original character as he was in 1938.
Man, oh man, John. I hope you’re not being serious. His hair was parted on the wrong side of his head? The tiny S’s on the suit? Get a grip, pal. The character evolves. The suit evolves. Get over it. Problem is “fans” like you refuse to evolve because you’re stuck in this fantasy world where you think the character should remain the same and never change because you have YOUR favorite version of him and “How dare someone do something different!!!” Do yourself a favor and come back to reality and quit being a whiny fanboy who cries because the character isn’t EXACTLY as YOU envision him.
I recognise your right to have your preferred version of Superman, and I’m all for that. But I do have to point out that ‘recognise’ is the British spelling of the word, and I am British so it’s not really misspelled at all.
im a 34 year olnd father of 3 ive been a superman fan as long as i can remeber.i love the stories, and the movies well except return but i liked parts of it i like to see different takes on the worlds greatest hero.everybody sees him different.some think he should stay the same way that they liked him there fav.way mabe people dont like your point of view.my view is everybody has a right to to exspess how they see superman you shouldnt put people down for the way they envison the man of steel.you havent seen the movie. get off your high horse and show some respect for other people save your negative out-dated views for someone who cares like the 1930s 90 year old black and white superman.how can you say your a real fan if you dont give people a chance to tell a new story and and judge them on there work and not your view of how it should be. by henery oaks a real superman fan
One think I hope they get right in this one is the humour.
The first 2 Superman films got the blend of action and humour right. Superman Returns didn’t seem to have enough humour.
In a post Nolan Batman era, I am a bit worried that this film will be too serious. The kid in the cape in the trailer gives a bit of hope :)
You are arrogant to call fans of Superman ignorant for not liking the trailer. No-one is ignorant for not enjoying something. Am I ignorant for being insulted by your opening paragraph? I understand the approach they have taken with the trailer and the reasons for doing so, but for me, it’s still nothing more than a boring trailer.
Just focus on the facts, not insulting people that are actually excited to hear what ‘you’ have to say and have made the effort to click on your article.
I do see your point, and I’m sorry you were offended. But at the same time, this is an opinion piece, and in my opinion every shot in the trailer is packed with subtext that understands and relates to Superman on a deep subtextual level. Superman is the rock, while we are the water washing over him. And the seagull is him, afloat above a churning earth that he must watch over. Every shot made me realise that little bit more that this movie understands exactly what Superman is about.
Batman and Superman, in the same movie… sweeeet.
as for Snyder.. caution is the word, but if he does the smart choice to trow some hints about justice league, Im sold.
i hope battsy boy and supes have a super hero smackdown.what about you?
Thanks Stuart, agreed, even though the trailer reeks of artistic art house metaphors, I guess I was expecting a fist of blistering Hollywood punch, which lead to disappointment when all we were given was footage that looked like (in my opinion) a student film. But yes I do agree, they are taking a very strategic approach to regaining societies trust back into a character that is so far removed from modern day reality that he is non believable.
Since Superman is being played by a Brit, I think British spelling is a tad acceptable :-) I’m Australian so we use the same spelling. One of the funniest things I heard was an American say, “so the English speak American right?”.
Regarding the costume, it’s always been difficult to explain, in any medium. I thought that the Christopher Reeve version was an excellent interpretation of the classic costume, with plausible explanations for its rather garish appearance. For example, it was traditional Kryptonian garb that was colored subtly and glowing on the red sun illuminated/ice world of his home planet but appeared bright red, blue and yellow under the light of Earth’s yellow sun, and the “Big Monogram” wasn’t really an english letter “S” in a shield, but rather a Kryptonian symbol that simply resembled it. The costume in “The Man of Steel” seems to follow that same general explanation of it being Kryptonian clothing rather than a costume, even if it is very elaborate and different from the classic suit. (i.e., Jor-El’s clothing is similar to his son’s and sports the same symbol.) The costume in “Superman Returns,” on the other hand, was actually a costume, with the “S” symbol being precisely that, inexplicably repeated on the belt buckle and as a pattern in the fabric. Other than the subdued colors, it just looked foolish, and seemed to have no rational explanation for appearing as it did. It is easily the worst of the three.
as a Batman fan i agree that the moment superman and batman share a screen together will be amazing……….but i hope they go in depth of how different they are…….also i liked the superman returns…..also i believe the dc movie universe started with mr.Nolans version of batman, then green lantern
(the only dc movie with a post credits scene)
and now man of steel……i believe they should introduce wonder woman in the JLA movie
I gree but I do hope they show that manly bond they tend to have.
10 reasons not to be excited:
1. The suit is the worst design superman has ever worn.
2. John Williams music will be snobbishly absent from it.
3. Superman is not supposed to be Dark.
4. Excessive CGI, Donners Helipad scene was 100x better than Singers
5. The lead actor is not a great actor.
6. Main Score written by Hans, who wrote Nolans Batman movies…which had no main theme at all. Can you hum any character themes from the Nolan Batman movies? No? Didn’t think so.
7. Zod has already been done, no creative writing at all.
8. Trailer ripped off Lord of the rings music…GREAT SIGN!!! not
9. Superman does not leave smoke trails when he flew. How stupid.
10.Warping the beloved Story of superman to the point of insanity.
The movie is going to be very well directed, visually stunning. But it wont make a shred of sense and will be a huge insult to comic books fans, disrespectful to the character in every way. I assure you.
I have one reason not to be excited. Zack Snyder. He is mediocre director who make mediocre forgettable films.
