Like most people my age “Clash of the Titans” has always been the fond TV friendly memory of Harry Hamlin, campy outfits and Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion monsters, but in updating it for 2010 Louis Leterrier and project originator Basil Iwanyk give us the darker, grittier version of Perseus’ fight against Gods and Monsters.
That’s not to say we’ve ended up with the Greek mythology version of the “Battle of Algiers”; when you’re starting point is the 1981 original darkness and grit are relative terms. Even the daftest of Hamlin’s travelling companions gets an amusingly brief cameo.
The story is much the same but with a few new twists and turns, Perseus’ (Sam Worthington) hatred of the Gods, and by design his own Demi-God status, after seeing his adopted family murdered as they’re caught up in Hades’ (Ralph Fiennes) revengeful rage on statue-defiling soldiers, and the God’s more pointed malevolence and disdain, but the trio of scriptwriters seem to have had their wings clipped in the transfer from the page to screen, buried under the need for monsters and madness rather than musing.
Of course you could argue that pausing for thought has no place in a blockbuster but in an effort to shoe-horn the story into the overlord Warner Bros’ multiplex-friendly running time the enjoyably kinetic action veers into, and then fully embraces, the frenetic; plot points zinging by like one of Medusa’s flying arrows. You can almost hear the studio chorus yelling faster, faster as the loose ends dangle in front of the looming credits. Sequences that seemed to have been garroted, such as Perseus’ arrival in Argos or the later action of Andromeda going to meet her fate with the Kraken stream by at such a pace that my 3D-addled brain barely registered their importance. An extra 15 minutes of plot padding or just mood-setting would have made a world of difference.
An entire sub-plot involving the zealots and their leader Prokopion (Luke Treadaway) is finally reduced to a practical pointlessness as the building confrontation between their desire to sacrifice Andromeda (Alexa Davalos) to save Argos, and Andromeda’s survival, is finally negated by her none too conflicted decision to just accept her fate and become mythological lunch.
The entire cast play gamely with the breakneck exposition amidst the all the set-pieces but they have little chance of making much of an impression beyond looking dandy in Lindy Hemmings’ outfits. The women of the piece, Alexa Davalos and Gemma Arterton (as Perseus’ guardian Io), shine a little among the monster mashing but like the gang sent with Perseus on his quest they’re merely second-class citizens. The only one who manages to stand out is Mads Mikkelsen as the gruff and experienced Draco.
Sam Worthington just adds to my puzzlement at his current position in the Hollywood hierarchy. For the opening 45 minutes there seemed to be the kernel of something more than one dimensional brooding but that was eventually lost in the impressive production and creature design. Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes have a little fun as, alternately, Zeus releasing the Kraken, and Hades hissing his lines and destroying all and sundry like a deified sulphuric barbecue.
Louis Leterrier in the box-seat seems to consistently suffer from express-train direction, from his exposure to Luc Besson’s high-octane and low concept “Transporter” series to the disappointing (and dare I say over-edited) “The Incredible Hulk”. Perhaps he’s scared to just pause a moment in these stories and let them breathe lest the audience and his paymasters start wondering where all the explosions / mutants / giant scorpions are.
I’d like to think that it’s the non-Olympian gods of the studios that keep constraining him while he smiles through, but until he gets a publicly acknowledged free rein I’ll just have to go along with putting on an expectant face. Fingers crossed for “The Avengers” anyone?
This kind of push me-pull you from Warners must surely account for the late in the day decision to wrap all the carefully framed widescreen photography and slick VFX into bolted-on 3D. It’s extraordinary how the success of a single film can send the movie bureaucracy into hysteria, and I’m not convinced that the measured and painstaking revolution in film-making James Cameron envisaged was quite this way round.
In truth though most of the transfer creates a perfectly serviceable experience, apart from a couple of moments when a character seems to have a second head, and the flying arrival of Pegasus seems to herald a horse with wings and eight legs. The problem of course is that in a film with no production planning for an extra dimension the 3D aspect doesn’t really add anything to what we’re watching, and lifting up my specs now and then I could see what seemed to be the more engaging and immersive experience I was missing.
And that’s something I’m going to experience when I catch “Clash of the Titans” again the old fashioned way, because even with all its faults it was, at the very least, what its leading man wanted; a bit darker and a bit rougher than its predecessor, but just as popcorn. Perhaps the eventual release onto DVD/Blu-ray will show if squeezed into its 1 hour 45 minutes running time there is a more sure-footed and satisfying film waiting to escape.
Whatever the case however, and whatever it’s level of undemanding enjoyment, in twenty years time you might be hard-pressed to find the same re-run induced affection for Perseus’ 21st century outing.
“Clash of the Titans” opens in the U.K. and the U.S. on Friday.

I will not ever see this in 3D – or any other converted film, for that matter.
I don’t have my hopes up about this thing.
My expectations are low too. At least I can my son along I suppose. Some decent monsters and heavyweight cast might provide passable fun.
I miss films that have been shot on proper 16mm/35mm film in real locations rather than on green screen digital studios and edited on Macs.
Who can we blame for this erosion of traditional filmmaking values?
George Lucas? He was the one that turned to the dark side… of film making…
This looks alot like transformers 2, but at least it can’t be as bad as transformers 2. At least, I hope not.
Hang on there Mark, you didn’t like Leterrier’s Hulk? That was a pretty decent movie, which in turn makes me distrust your Titans review. It may be good after all, inspite of your comments.
Ah Lee, the ol’ Incredible Hulk question… Yes, it was disappointing because I frankly had such high expectations for it after Ang Lee’s interesting but ponderous version. Ed Norton as Banner? Potential greatness. But in the end I do think it suffered from too much of the editorial scissors (something Norton seemed to want to grumble about). Still, I did enjoy it for what it became; I mean hell, it’s in my DVD collection.
Paul L., the sad thing with Clash is that huge chunks of it were filmed in real locations, from a volcano in Tenerife to a disused Welsh slate mine, and the outside Argos set they built at Longcross Studios was massive (with ok, a gazillion CGI monsters laid over the top). I guess they just felt that weird, natural landscape stuff in 2 dimensions wasn’t good enough.
Ok Mark, I agree that Hulk was missing some elements. Still, I thought it had more checks on the plus side than on the minus side. I’m hoping Titans isn’t as bad movie as you describe it. If it’s somewhere around the Incredible Hulk quality, then it’ll be at least enjoyable.
Well like I said it’s resulted in Clash being undemanding popcorn enjoyment; what annoys me (and always does) is the apparent and consistent fear of making something great, in favour of just hovering around the safety of the middle ground. It becomes about numbers, not movie-making…
Blimey Mark – there’s so much CGI in it – from the trailer I’ve seen – that even the REAL locations look fake.
Aye Paul, the trailer is a CGI-fest, it’s monsters over vistas; but there are actually real things in there (just look at all the sand being trampled by 50ft scorpioks…). They even went all the way to Ethiopia for some shots.
3D hasnt impressed me so far- saw avatar in both 2d and 3d and didnt feel much either way. Didnt really felt it helped Clash of the Titans much. But who doesnt love some greek mythology! Still, cant say i thought much of it this remake- in fact you could feel the B-grade-ness coming off it, regardless of the A-list actors (maybe it was something to do with the script…). Twas ok.
Bring on Conan, eh?
PS.Can i just say, Prokopion irritated the shit out of me!
Saw this movie last night and am still reeling from the disappointment. It just didn’t deliver. Weak, telegraphed plot, full of glaring inconsistencies and jarring non sequiturs. Worthington was worthless, truly one-dimensional unless you count a Russell Crowe “Gladiator” impersonation as a dimension. I won’t even mention the 3-D, which wasn’t. I was lured by the original, which at least had a plot and some development of it in between admittedly low-tech action scenes. This movie will insult the intelligence of all over the age of 11, maybe 12. In sum: all frosting but no cake.
oh my god you people are sad, you are way too critical of films, yes ok the plot may not be all that but i imagine it was made with the thought that people would piece the plot themselves and goddam enjoy the special effects, the old clash of the titans film was awful it just cant live up up to spine tingling action and special effects of today. get a life and enjoy it
This move was extraordinarily bad. First of all, the 3D was terrible. It was the flattest 3D I think I’ve ever seen…worse then the old school 3D from back in the day with the red and blue plastic and cardboard glasses. The whole rebelling against the gods thing was a little rediculous. There was almost no character development. The special effects and animation were cheap, unrealistic and worthy of a B movie. Medusa was probably the worst animated creature that I have seen since Anaconda 2. They cut out a couple of cool monsters like Cerberus and those big vultures. The whole seen with the giant scorpions was just silly and those rediculous Djinn pop up. I really just don’t understand what they were thinking. All said and done, I found it incredibly disappointing…the SyFy Channel produces better quality movies.
As christian said, the old Clash of the Titans film had no plot. It was about a guy fighting monsters. I have yet to see the new movie and am rather excited to see it as I’m sure having a guy fighting monsters isn’t really a hard thing to do.
The original was corny and cheesy with all sorts of plot holes and if you went into this one expecting anything different any disappointment was your fault.
Funny how you guys can, without having seen this movie, discount reviews from people who’ve seen both. I know what the original was and what it wasn’t; I know what the remake was and what it wasn’t. I know the difference between good and average films, and bad movies. This is a bad movie. The original wasn’t brilliant but by comparison the plot was credible, while this one was devoid of value. It’s my fault that I’m disappointed? Sure, it’s my fault the movie sucked on almost all counts. “Guy fighting monsters” isn’t hard to do? Says you. You may have low standards. But there is quality monster fighting enhanced by a good plot that leaves one satisfied, and there is so-so monster fighting interspersed among a plot that is painful to watch and leaves one disappointed. Do I really need to explain this? Go watch the movie and enjoy it, if you can. Come back and tell us all how great it was. I’m sure you will convince yourself it’s not, after all, a giant festering turd.
By the way Chanelle you are right on all points. We could add another dozen ridiculously bad plot elements to the list, but that would be overkill. And our friends christian and Stephen would blow gaskets — instead of … well, never mind.
I’ve seen this film. Very disappointed! One star will be too much for really bad movie!
If in any doubt about how bad this film is, I suggest you do what we did, that is watch the origanl film on dvd after seeing the remake. The origanl film although not brilliant is (imo) far superior.
I saw this movie at the weekend and I actually enjoyed it because I had such low expectations and it had a decent cast who carried the movie – making up for some of the worst film direction I have seen on a blockbuster movie. .
And it had SO much potential. The studio, producers and director (not sure how much his hands were tied) showed a complete disrespect for the audience with an awful 3D rendition and some special effect scenes which just seemed totally rushed.
The ‘story’ is obviously going to be pretty basic but there was great potential to invest some empathy and character development with the small army of soldiers who went with Perseus on the quest. However, they seemed to be in such a rush to get to the next set piece that we lost all emotion. Mads Mikkelsen and Liam Cunningham are decent actors sorely underused.
It felt like Jack the Ripper had slashed and edited the movie down to 1hour 45mins in order to squeeze on as many screenings throughout the day.
* spoiler *
And Neeson’s Zeus popping up throughout didn’t make much sense. Why release the Kraken AND help Perseus too? A bit of exposition at the end explained that but there was no real pain in Zeus’s dilemma.
The chemistry between Worthington/Arterton was excellent I thought but that too was fudged.
The whole thing was a mess and some of the scenes were cut like MTV promos allowing none of the action to breathe. The least said about the 3D the better. Helen Keller could’ve done a better job.
An earlier ‘post’ suggests not to take it so seriously and enjoy the movie. Well, I did enjoy the effort of the cast and I love Greek myths but I hope the producers/director never get their hands on another movie as they don’t deserve my hard-earned money again.
A missed opportunity to make a really great popcorn movie thrown away.
I am a huge science fantasy fan and have great memories of the originate COTT and fond memories of Jason and the Argonauts even if the attempts at special effects never quite made it. I had great expectations of the 2010 version with the advance in cinematography and the huge leap forward in CGI. Having seen Avatar in 3D my appetite was seriously whetted. I took my 19 year old son to see Clash of the Titans and was deeply moved. That is deeply moved to leave the cinema after about 5 mins. I really can’t think of anything good to say about it. Ok, well I enjoyed the scrap with the huge scorpions but only just. To dress this up as a 3D movie was also a crime; it suffered massively from poor shadowing and it made a bad film so much worse. Indeed, I am seeking a refund on the basis that this was not in anyway a 3D movie.
Well, I was sorely disappointed to have watched this classic in 3D. To put it bluntly, where was the 3D effect ???? A total waste of time and money, this failed miserably with myself and my friends I went to view this movie with, we were all left feeling cheated. It was terribly rushed with many scenes just happening in a blur, the storyline was all backwards and not a patch on the original ! A black pegasus ???? What the ??? What happned to Perseus battling for the hand of Andromeda ??? Where was the owl Bubo (oh he did have a tiny part!)….give me the 1981 version anytime…this movie did not do it justice…
THE ORIGINAL CLASH OF THE TITANS WAS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIE. I am saddened and I am shocked at the liberties that were taken. Even with the clay-mation as the state of the art effect 1981 it told an amazing story.
Now we have everything CGI AND real-to-life monsters at our disposal we destroy the heart of the film “the story”. Why not just polish the apple and avoid confusion.
The1981 version with current Stichen Witches was what been amazing.
1. The destruction of Argos by Poseidon with the help of Cracken because Zeus seduced the Kings daughter. So the King set his daughter and (Demi God son) Peruses adrift. And the rage is born.
2. They tried to hold true with the battle of Medusas and that was great.
3. The effects coupled with the original story line would have made this a great movie. FOR THOSE OF YOU HAVE NOT FIGURED IT OUT YET CGI SUPPORTS THE STORY. My 9 year old son and I were so disappointed.
4. Every one knows this story. It would be like change the story of the Scarlet letter because we had theses great 3d effects..
5. I was looking forward to seeing this from the moment I heard Liam Nissan say “REALESE the CRACKEN”. Call this something else and you will you’re your selves some headache. It was good C movie but it was not Clash of the Titans. I am DISPOINTED
Sorry
William
Men this was mere disrespect to Greek mythology,a black pegasus?Danae being wife instead of a daughter and Perseus leaving with someone else besides Andromeda at the end.So how do they go on having kids then. These guys made a full mess of the actual story. What a let down.
Remakes remakes everywhere. It’s truly Mungus McMungflap’s reign of terror in the world of cinema. I saw the original Clash yesterday, and despite the perms and some misplaced late 70s fashion, I enjoyed it for the lulz. There’s little in this ‘darker,’ rough round the edges, and takes-itself-seriously version which entices a viewing for me. Charon looks good from the stills I’ve seen, but other than that it’s pure faggery. And if anyone is going to see this simply for the ’3D experience LOL,’ well you’re a douche.
The 3D here (like that Tim Burton crapfest Alice in Wonderdreck) was done in post anyway, so it’s not even real 3D. It’s all digital aftertouching. The most you’ll come out with at the end of this is a headache and an IOU to yourself for wasting a few hours of your life. And there’ll be more of this filmed in 2D screened in 3D shite, because you pay more for a 3D ticket innit? All because that Pocahontas remake made waves with the studios. I forget the name. Oh yeah, Avatar. And LOL at the Resident Evil Afterlife trailer. Everything’s flying at the screen. Private plane. Whoosh. Ninja stars. Whoosh. Milla Jovovich. Whoose. Sunglasses!!!! Whoosh. But hey, as a RE video game fanatic I’ll admit it. Afterlife is the only 3D film so far that I’m prepared to pay for (and then slam, slate, rant, and hate). It had better win some Razzies or Worst Casting Director or something.
Anyway.
Remakes remakes everywhere. I’ve paid to see Kick-Ass twice so far. And it looks like I’ll be watching it a third time pretty soon.
Well now it’s made a reasonable opening in the States don’t be surprised if they start rubbing their hands at the prospect of Jason & the Argonauts – now that would be travesty.
I think all your reviews are waaaay overzealous. I understand that you all like your ‘character developement’ and ‘emotional growth’ but c’mon. If you REALLY want these things, go read a book. I paid for an action-packed movie based on Greek mythology, and got exactly what I paid for. I don’t care if it wasn’t ‘accurate’, or if the characters didn’t hold hands and sing around a campfire.
Stop comparing it to a movie it is not. It is not the 1980′s Clash of the Titans. It has no correlation to it, other than being a remake. Why was Pegasus black? Who the hell cares!
This movie was awesome. The only bad thing is it didn’t follow the original story line. Up yours Dooshebags!
@ Luke – I know what you’re saying mate but while I enjoyed the movie as a bit of entertainment it was so badly directed that I felt I didn’t get my money’s worth. It could have been such a brilliant popcorn epic but ruined in the end by crap 3D and being directed by a blind Frenchman with as much talent as a shaved monkey in a tracksuit throwing shit at the wall.
Anyway, on a website called Obsessed With Film – I expect a bit of over-zealousness!
@Luke – Just watch a video game, you get as much action and as little plot. And better 3D. I wasn’t looking for a deep message but I did expect the scenes to actually be linked logically and the characters to be somehow meaningful. Wish I had such simple taste in movies, I would never be disappointed …
@Trenton – You are awesome! Your comment is awesome! The way you misspelled “douchebags” is awesome! Everything is awesome! And Avatar was really-way-super-mega-awesome with awesome cherries on top!
LOL now go do your homework or you might have to repeat your freshman year of high school. Again …
Those were some ridiculously long sentences, really difficult to read.
I loved Clash of the Titans when it first came out and I still love it now. The story is great. The gods in the movie could be over-the-top but what can you expect from gods.
I loved the original Clash of the Titans. Jason and the Argonauts is still one of my all-time favorite movies. I was so looking forward to seeing this and could care less about 3-D. How sad. Thanks for the warnings and thank you, Crater… I got a giggle out of that one.
Just been to see this and was utterly disappointed. There was no build up to any action, the fight scenes were reduced to dark shakey smudges and the monsters apart from the kraken not at all menacing. What is a great story has certainly not been done justice here. Although the cast was good they didn’t manage to breathe any life to the lamentable script as the movie simply leapt from one crap cgi scene to the next. The 3d was a waste of time and did not add anything. All in all probably one of the worst movies I have ever paid to go and see.
itoke my famly to see this on satday it gave my 4 year old boy night mers, my 8 year old doughter thoght it woz amazing, my hubby fell asleep (but he did this with alic in wunderland to lol) i woz very frustrated as i felt the screen wont big enuf 4 the 3d to work right, but if wot i have red is trow then it wont a 3d film as it woz not shot by 3d camras like avatar woz. shorly the edating sweet cant make just eny film 3d. i wos so excited wen i fownd out i had been re made i nerly wet my self, glad i dint now lol. all i wont to do is see the 81 vershon of it coz that 1 woz mint. this wos very much like the mummy or the scorpiun king and it evan had the rock in it to (dunt he look old now lol) if you not seen the 81 film befor then this is ok i ges. but i wud defo wach the 81 film after then you will get why all the peps are so peed about it. there is so much more mising fromm 2010 film its not funny its madning.
sorry for the rant
dont apologise for ranting, monie, you are welcome to your say as we all are. However, i dunno where you are from but i did have some trouble reading what you wrote.
The Rock is not in this Clash of the Titans.
Does anyone know if they ARE seriously considering doing a Jason and Argonauts after this?
Wow, since this starts out like a plagiaristic version of what movieviral has I’ll just plagiarize my comments from over there.
Have you even watched the original? So as not to ruin the new one I’ll only talk about the old and not give answers, but make points with questions.
What happened to Perseus mother in the original?
What happened to the riddles?
What happened to the bickering and this-for-that actions of the Gods?
What role did Hades fulfill?
Who does Perseus fall for?
I can keep going but it’s obvious, if you can answer those questions, that the new movie only shares some of the names and locations with the original. There’s hardly as scene that doesn’t deviate from the original.
Disappointing. Very disappointing. Like others I could have dealt with the upgraded FX, plot adjustments, and other nuances that didn’t tell a different story.
To those that say suck it up, it’s a remake. No, we don’t have to suck it up. Imagine if the “new released” versions of the old star wars were as much as a deviation as these were, would you be happy? Hell, George Lucas made Greedo shoot first and some treat Lucas like he killed baby Jesus himself.
THIS MOVIE WAS AWESOME! I GIVE IT 5 STARS. AWESOME,HAP-N, IT TRULY KICK ASS. BEST MOVIE I HAVE SEEN THIS YEAR. YOU RULE LOUIS,YOUR THE BEST DIRECTOR TO HIT HOLLYWOOD IN YEARS. MARVEL SHOULD HAVE HIM DIRECT ALL OF THE SUPER HERO MOVIES. TO BAD HE DID NOT DIRECT IRON MAN 2. OUT OF ALL THE SNEAK PEAKS AND TRAILORS IT LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER LAME ASS RIDE ON A SWOLLER PUFFED UP DONKYS DICK! WHAT I DONT GET IS EVERY TIME THESE CRITICS SAY A MOVIE SUCKS IT, TURNS OUT ITS GREAT. THEY SAY ITS GREAT TURNS OUT IT SUCKS IT HARD. WHAT THE HELL! JUST GO SEE CLASH, ITS A GREAT MOVIE. LONG-DUCK-DONG……….OUT
@LONGduckDONG – Not sure what movie you were watching! Oh and there is not need to SHOUT!!
THAT WAS RUBBISH, AS POINTED OUT, TOTALLY PUSHED EVERYTHING IN TO SAVE TIME AND MISSED OUT A LOT OF THE OLD FILMS BEST BITS. AND PERSEUS WOULDNT HAVE A HAD A SKIN HEAD IN THOSE DAYS ??? THE OLD FILM WAS FAR SUPERIOR AND A LOT BETTER ENJOYMENT EVEN THOUGH THEY DIDNT HAVE SPECIAL EFFECTS LIKE TODAY !! PEGASUS WAS SPOILT ASWELL, TURNED INTO A DARK HORSE . COULD HAVE BEEN MADE A LOT BETTER, IF THEY STUCK TO THE OLD FILM FULL STORY, AND ADDED EXTRA CINEMA TIME.
Ok so i wasnt expecting too much as everything i heard wasn’t good. but it was…ok, unfortunately a lot of the subplot & charactors from the old film were lost…to the CGI affects it would seem.
Some pointers
Pegasus..Black inside of white, point??
Medusa..played by a russian model! WFT! she suppose to be ugly.
That scene were they tried to defeat Medusa annoyed me..they just waltzed in there with no plan or skillful attack & it showed. In the old one they planned it & used their shieldS to see her reflection..i was shouting the whole way though the new one..used your shield’s!! your SHIELD’S!! and just at the end Perseus finally noticed ‘Hey i can used my Shield as a mirror’! DOH!! this was of course after all his friends has been killed!!
I felt andromada & Gemma arterton charactors should have switched places, as andromada appeared too old. And what of the funny Owl? That brought a touch of humour to the old one…it was in one scene,
were Perseus pulled it out and said ‘Whats this?’ i was like its Bubo!! yeahhh!!! and then one of his friends said ‘Leave it’ NOOOOO!!! And Sam Worthington as Perseus…forgettable acting & face. the only one of any charactor to stand out was Mads Mikkelsen as Draco. this film’s disapointment’s mirrors what i’ve felt for a lot of recent films, were the creators appear to be more caught up in special affects than the storyline..and it shows! :(
@LONGduckDONG ,Trenton & Luke …The clash of the Titans 2010 was written off of the same Greek Mythology (sorry you guys probably won’t understand that word so let’s use story instead of Mythology), as that the one of 1981. The Director plain and simple created his own so he should have named it something else instead of conning the public into flooding the cinemas to watch the remake of what is a great story, whether in book or on film. This movie like others might have pointed out in other words was a disaster. And you three could go play some video games if all you want in a movie is action.By the way look up critics in the dictionary see if you can piece it together with critics to get yourselves a meaning of the phrase.
I just saw this movie tonight and I have to agree, wholeheartedly that this was the most craptastic “remake” of one of my fondly remembered childhood movies ever!
The plot, which was fairly well laid out many centuries ago was non-existent. The changes to the characters we hokey to say the least and where were the gods? We got to see three or four and only two of them had any lines.
Not to mention, the whole mortals trying to “spit in the eyes” of the gods thing made absolutely no sense. There was no back story to support the humans rebelling other than having a bad day of fishing.
And what the hell was Io doing in this film? She wasn’t even in the same myth as Perseus. And if Queen Cassiopeia had just insulted Aprhrodite, the goddess of Love and Beauty, by say that Andromeda was more beautiful, why wasn’t Aphrodite the one who was pissed off? Why would Hades, who wanted to bring down Zeus and the other gods even care?
The whole movie was just far to full of plot holes and horrid direction that I wanted to leave the cinema, too bad I didn’t.
I just hope that the rumors I heard about there being, in essence, an entirely different version, due to scenes that exist that were cut, that would make so much more sense and make this movie so much better.
If you haven’t seen this yet, do yourself a favor and forget that this even exists.
@Lennaire – well said…
@sophie – Zak Penn was hired to write a new Jason and the Argonauts script in Aug 2008 for 20th century Fox, and under the production title ‘The Argonauts’ it’s apparently headed for a 2011 release (currently listed as ‘in development’). Now Clash has made $115 million in a couple of weeks (even accounting for 3D ticket prices) they might start attacking it with more enthusiasm. Pen is also on board as a producer, but who knows what the quality of his version is; I mean he did write X-Men: The Last Stand.. ;)
@Mark – When you say made $115M Mark, is that clear profit or what it has taken at the box office. How much did it cost to make incidentally?
@Tebo – Yep, fair question… It’s estimated budget was $125M. I also shouldn’t have been so N.America – centric as the more important worldwide gross is currently around $230-240M. They’ll use current figures to project an eventual total (+ blu-ray/dvd sales). Of course who knows what the marketing spend has been, which they haven’t exactly skimped on. Still, they’re probably feeling fairly satisfied with it’s ok but not spectacular box office. I wonder how it would have faired without the bolted on 3D…
@Mark – thanks for that. I think that the film industry needs to get 3D out of its system, or embrace it entirely such that the technology is more deeply embedded in the end-product, unlike Clash! So I think that the 3D element, in view of its newness, is helping the marketing of the film considerably. They have also been very clever with the various marketing trailers which have been particularly well edited. In short, I suspect that the bolted on 3D has been a timely real force multiplier..
Totally.. Clash in 3D is artistically inept but as far as Warners is concerned it was financial genius. Of course the trouble with Clash being a somewhat success (even with the less than stellar reviews) is that studios will be less inclined to put in the technological effort of Cameron. But hopefully audiences won’t take too long to stop being wowed by anything in 3D and will start to pick and choose what’s worth forking out cash for. Post-production 3D won’t be a magic bullet forever.
2 stars out of 5 is about right — give it a star for very good special effects, and another star for the performances of Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, and Gemma Arterton. Sam Worthington’s BORING performance; a too thin plot line; too many characters coming in and out of the flick; and no real continiuty really detracted from the film. And what was with a black Pegusus and showing us the mechanical owl only to not use it for anything? I think anyone seeing the movie without knowledge of the original was at a real disadvantage — it was only knowing the story before-hand that allowed me to piece a lot of it together. All in all—a pretty uneven effort, which could have been better!!!
@Mark, thanks for the info on jason and argonauts
Urgh, i really hope the studios dont think they can be lazy about 3D. I reckon Avatar was worth seeing in 3D. I feel like now that ive seen Clash i can compare shit 3D and good 3D. I dont really like 3D at all anyway…too much is being made out of it (3D tv…3D mobiles/cell phones…urgh, overload).
watched this in 3d and all i can say it that the some of the effects were too fast for 3d. although it did not meet others’ expectations (towering expectations), i think this movie delivered the story pretty well. kids especially will think this movie is a rockstar, but for mythology fanatics, i think this offends the sanctity of mythology. the fight with medusa is in my opinion a must-see in this movie
@sophie – aye, and the studios will ride the wave until we all become a little more judgmental. The more 3D, the more choice, the more films get ignored (hopefully the bad ones, but you can’t have everything…)
I was really disappointed with the movie after looking forward to it for so long. Sam Worthington’s accent was terrible – for all the money he earns he could at least get someone to help him with a proper american accent (if that’s what he’s trying) – it must be said that his accent in Avatar was dodgy at times, but an excellent script and fantastic effects hid his inadequate performance. Unfortunately for him, Clash of the Titans did not have the script or effects to sugar-coat his performance.
People have bragged about the special effects, but i’m still not sure what they’re referring to – still felt low budget to me, but maybe I was just expecting a movie to rival the best of them. With the creativity and of mythology on their side, I feel they’ve fallen well short of the movies full potential.
fcking haters.. live your lives or do your own epic fail movie.. then let see if you could all earn millions in one premiere…
@jar Articulate and clear, it wasn’t!
I like that when Perseus and Io are getting ready for sexytime in the dead-person ship she says “calm your storm.” That always works on me. I guess they could have no fully-clothed humping motions since it’s PG-13
