I guess Robert Downey Jr has resigned himself to being a franchise actor from here on in. The A-lister, currently shooting ‘Sherlock Holmes 2′, will return for ‘Iron Man 3‘, which now has a May 3rd 2013 release date set – just one year after Downey Jr stars in ‘The Avengers‘.
That’s probably a full year before we actually expected to see Tony Stark back on the big screen post Marvel’s ambitious ensemble. Obviously, it means shooting will begin on ‘Iron Man 3′ before ‘The Avengers’ is even released in cinema’s.
Presumably, there will be a ‘Sherlock Holmes 3′ in there somewhere too and then an ‘Avengers 2′, so essentially, the majority of Downey Jr’s next five years will be playing just two characters. Shame.
Given the choice I would rather see a longer gap in between these movies. I didn’t enjoy that much of ‘Iron Man 2‘ this year and with the chances of Jon Favreau returning to direct being very slim indeed, I’m worried how low the quality control on this franchise will fall.
Also announced today by Deadline – Disney have bought the distribution rights to both ‘The Avengers’ and ‘Iron Man 3′ from Paramount Pictures for $115 million, ending the relationship between them and Marvel once ‘Thor’ and ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ hit next year. Fleming has all the number details.

like we really need a 3rd. I didn’t like Iron man 2 that much. very big disappointment. and I don’t see it as a very lucrative series, not as much as spiderman or say batman…How many times do we want to watch CG robots fight? oh wait…that sounds familiar.
So because you didn’t like IM2, it’s not “a lucrative series”? And then you compare it to Spider-man, whose third film was a total joke and the next slated film completely ignores the first three and starts everything all over again? Please, honey. It didn’t work for X-Men, it didn’t work for Superman, it’s not going to work for Spider-man. Take a minute to stop and consider the only two major sci-fi/action series that have been successful even after rebooted, Star Trek and Batman, and what do they have in common that X-Men, Superman and Spider-man don’t? Notably, it’s something the Iron Man series has as well. Give up? It’s a concept based in reality, actual science, and the possibility that if someone so chose, and had the money behind them to do it, they could make superheroes of themselves. That’s a hell of a lot more accessible to people than mutants and aliens. People connect to that. Considering the overwhelming success of Iron Man when the story and character have both always been considered relatively second-rate in the comic book world? I’d say it’s already a pretty lucrative series or they wouldn’t have The Avengers coming up, nor a third film. I agree that IM2 was comparatively weak when compared to the first film, but it wasn’t all bad. You can’t even bring Transformers into this argument because that’s a whole other realm of cinema entertainment – there isn’t supposed to be any intelligence to it, it’s a family series for cryin’ out loud. Batman and Iron Man aren’t geared toward kids, they’re for adults. They just happen to entail enough action and explosions to keep kids amped while everything else appeals to their parents. Another point that makes it a lucrative enough series when you take into account how difficult it is for a comic book-based film to have something for all ages. By the way? Iron Man isn’t a robot and not entirely CG. A good portion of the scenes filmed in both IM movies were filmed with RDJ in an actual, practical suit. YES MY PANTIES ARE IN A TWIST ABOUT YOUR COMMENT, BLAH BLAH. I’m one of those rare chicks who gets passionate about the precious few comic book films that get made and released, okay. There aren’t enough and there are too many that come out which get rushed, or don’t get the budget and treatment they deserve, and good stories that I’ve grown up with and loved get mashed to bits. Iron Man has been a rare exception.
I have to give it to you, well played. I was just taking out my anger on Iron man 3 i guess cause I didn’t like the second one. My entire thought process was wrapped around that ridiculous fight in Stark’s mansion between him and Rhodes in those suits.
Everything you’ve said I agree with wholeheartedly. Sorry to get your panties in a bunch.
