With “The Avengers” sequel officially confirmed by Marvel/Disney, comic book fans the world over will be contemplating which of the publisher’s other heroes could be added to the line-up, potentially getting their own solo movie as soon as 2014 – filling the popularly acknowledged gap in the schedule alongside Captain America 2 that summer.
Of course, we have to bear in mind that Marvel Studios do not own the film rights to characters as key to their comic book universe as Daredevil, Spider-Man, Wolverine or the Fantastic Four – all of whom have allied with or become members of the Avengers at one time or another – but with that consideration in place, here is another of our suggestions for Marvel’s Next Avenger:
Doctor Strange (Dr. Stephen Strange)
Why?: Marvel prides itself on the fact that its universe mixes varied types of heroes and so far their filmic universe has successfully blended some of these in a credible way. In The Avengers you have examples of a tech hero (Iron Man), an alien/god (Thor), a victim of a radiation experiment (Hulk), a time displaced WWII super-soldier (Captain America), and two highly capable regular human types (Hawkeye and Black Widow). But one area of the comic universe not yet explored on the big screen is magic, as best represented by the Sorcerer Supreme himself: Doctor Stephen Strange.
As a relative newcomer to comics I’ve only been exposed to Strange through his appearances in titles like New Avengers, Avengers: Disassembled and Civil War – I’ve never read any of his limited solo series. Yet the character has made a very strong impression and left me with a desire to learn more. Strange is great because he’s one of those characters, like Leo in The West Wing or Giles in Buffy, who commands a deep, unwavering respect from everyone else. When he turns up he brings a sense that things just got serious and generally all the comic backchat stops whilst he explains whatever grave situation has befallen our heroes, who listen intently.
Strange is the polar opposite of those superheros who deliver a constant stream of one-liners and quips (I’m thinking Spider-Man, Hawkeye, Deadpool), in that he is entirely serious. He gives the air of a man who knows far too much about how the universe works to be able to relax. He’s always monitoring the use of the magics in our dimension, of which he is the undisputed, uncontested master. He exists above and beyond the regular concerns of the Marvel universe: for instance, (though he later regretted it) he chose to sit out the super human civil war as a neutral party, preferring not to meddle in affairs so prosaic as Captain America fighting Iron Man. He’s generally above that stuff.
He also looks badass. It’d be nice to see someone rocking his red cape and purple robes on the big screen, with a mustache and streaks of grey in his hair. If a guy can dress like that and command respect from the likes of Wolverine then you know he means business. He also has so much cool stuff – with iconic amulet the Eye of Agamotto and mystical mansion residence the Sanctum Sanctorum begging to become household names.
Story?: I can’t claim to know any of the great Strange stories of the past, either from old issues of Strange Tales (no relation) or from his own solo series, but for me the obvious starting point for the character would be to explain the journey of Stephen Strange from humble surgeon to master of magic. I think it would need to be set in the past because, in order to command such gravitas among the other Avengers, the character would need to pre-date the likes of Iron Man. When he shows up in an Avengers movie it needs to be with decades of learning and mastery of the mystical arts. The character was at his most popular in the mid-60s, because of the comic’s bizarre and psychedelic imagery, so why not position his story there?
This would enable some nice continuity details too, such as a background news report marking the 20th anniversary of Captain America’s disappearance or another appearance from Iron Man’s dad Howard Stark (perhaps again played by Mad Men’s John Slattery).
So it’s the tale of a man’s discovery of magic and his pilgrimage to become its master, culminating with Strange earning the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme – perhaps after a climactic bout with the demon Dormammu*. The film should end with Strange, still in the past, in deep meditation receiving a terrible vision of [insert Avengers 2 plot here], at which point he opens his eyes with a start and looks worried. Roll credits.
If Marvel/Disney wanted to they could easily use the character to tell a ghost story and make a sort of PG horror movie, but I think that would seem like too big a risk when the obvious money spinner would be something more action orientated.
*Introducing Dormammu also gives Marvel a way of bringing master criminal Parker Robbins (AKA The Hood) into their future movies. Which would be awesome.
Likelihood?: A Doctor Strange movie is almost certain to happen, it’s just a case of when. Producer Kevin Feige has already confirmed a long-term plan to take the cinematic universe in some wackier directions, stating several times that a Strange movie will be made in order to introduce magic. Even so it’s possibly the hardest sell to date, arguably even more difficult to integrate with Iron Man and company than the mythical viking god of thunder.
Whereas Thor can be explained as being from outta space, the full-blown weirdness of Strange is Earthbound and involves shifting between dimensions, casting spells and battling hellish demons (some of which are literally from Hell*). There have been decades of failed attempts to take this hero into cinemas, so this is one that could sit in development hell for a long time.
*In recent comics one of Strange’s primary allies has been none other than the son of Satan. Yes, really.

Casting?: Early depictions of the character seem to be closely based on Vincent Price and, were he not sadly departed from our plane of existence, I couldn’t think of a better match for the part. In terms of living actors, there has already been a lot of speculation online about who fans would like to see portray Dr. Stephen Strange. I’ll go through some of the candidates frequently mentioned and say why they aren’t going to happen:
Johnny Depp: Yes, he would look good in the costume but, in the case of Mr. Depp, art and commerce will unite to give a resounding “no!” Not only has this once charming character actor become a grotesque and OTT parody of himself, he would also be far too expensive for what would certainly be a moderately budgeted franchise. It’s also a bad fit because Depp plays characters who are eccentric yet brilliant (Edward Scissorhands, Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka), whilst Strange is intensely serious and brilliant. Whilst I suppose Depp’s close relationship with Disney and enthusiastic fanbase could sway execs into splashing the cash for his signature, I very much doubt they’d be able to tie him to one of the six picture deals Marvel has been handing out.
Jude Law: I like him very much as a supporting actor, with recent turns in the Sherlock Holmes movies and Contagion showing his range. However, if the last ten years have taught us anything, it’s that people don’t pay to go see any film in which Jude Law stars. Then again the pre-Iron Man Robert Downey Jr. was a not exactly a bankable star and had been written off more than once by critics.
Liam Neeson: I find this suggestion intriguing, with Neeson certainly having that required wizened gravitas and natural authority. However he’s become a little overexposed in recent times, appearing in a multitude of forgettable thrillers and blockbuster bit-parts. And making a Doctor Strange movie would certainly take more time and pay less money than appearing briefly in something like Battleship (unless post-Avengers hubris is about to make Marvel less financially stringent).
In my opinion it’s the actor most heavily linked to the part who makes for the best (and most likely) candidate. Patrick Dempsey. Fight that gag reflex. Admittedly there isn’t a good Patrick Dempsey vehicle that springs to mind (though I loved Enchanted), but the actor himself ticks a lot of boxes: he’s unlikely to be prohibitively expensive; he’d look dashing in a cape with flecks of grey hair; he could effectively pull off earnest-man-of-learning without seeming remote and inhuman; and, most crucially, he’s publicly on record as a Marvel Comics fanboy who has actively lobbied for the part.
Director?: The early comics were formally experimental, with the writers and artists of that niche title (with, it’s thought, a predominantly student stoner readership) allowed to mix the style of Stan Lee’s other books with such disparate elements as the imagery of Salvador Dali, ancient symbolism and eastern philosophy. Somehow I don’t see a Disney summer tentpole property going too far “out there”, but it’d be interesting to see a director attached who would bring an amount of style and oddness.
I nominate the visually distinctive talents of geek-friendly Mexican Guillermo Del Toro (once attached to the project in 2008), but he can’t seem to get any of his 57 current projects finished/started so he’s probably not on the radar of a studio increasingly notorious for its tight scheduling. A pity as the Hellboy movies provide an interesting template for someone might portray the world of demons and monsters in which Strange frequently does battle.
90s Tim Burton would be a decent fit but he isn’t with us anymore. But, as with Depp, the man currently calling himself Tim Burton has a strong relationship with Disney, so who knows? In which case that begs the question, which Marvel character is Helena Bonham Carter going to play? Terry Gilliam would be an inspired choice but he’s likely to have the same concerns surrounding his name as Del Toro, chief among them being question marks over whether or not the film would come in on time and on budget.
Alternatively, to explore the cheap, up-and-coming route, how about Woman in Black director James Watkins?

I can not say that i’m totally agree about Patrick Dempsey as Doctor Strange, I would be more interested to see Johnny Deep or Liam Neeson as the magical super hero with Guillermo Del Toro or Tim Burton directing.
I prefer johnny depp .he is brilliant and perfect for this.
yeh it would be so good but I think sadly he’ll cost to much, especially when there funding Robert Downey Jnr.
I think Johnny Depp will be perfect option for the charecter.
Patrick Dempsey over Johnny Depp? What? Regardless of this recent backlash, he’s still a great actor and much better than Dempsey.
Wow. A lot of Depp fans still out there. I bear the man no ill will but I think he’d be wrong for this part. When was the last time Johnny Depp played a character that wasn’t a wacky, comedy oddball? Doctor Strange is a serious and thoughtful man and I’d far rather someone with love for the character played him than someone looking for another fat Disney paycheck.
Thanks for the comments though. Removing Depp and Dempsey from the equation for the time being, any other actors people can think of for this role?
I could see Bradley Cooper or Matt Bromer pulling it off. Both play decent serious parts in their career, and both have a certain “bankable” appeal to the masses. Also both are sharp wits without being (and I agree totally with you about Depp) overtly odd ball or off color. I’d watch Dempsey stab at the part, but I just don’t see him carrying the franchise like some other actors would.
Or if they were willing to take the chance like was done with Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spiderman, they could go with a relative unknown and flip that coin. I’d love to see Scott Campbell give it his intense and always commanding yet somehow charming presentation. Scott is known for Boris in Royal Pains show and played Richard Parker in The Amazing Spiderman.
I actually really like Dempsey. Never thought much about him before in this role. I am personally truly lobbying for the Power Man and Iron Fist film with Terry Crews and Zachery Levi starring, respectively.
As far as Dr. Strange? I think Jon Hamm would fit perfectly. We see how intense he can be in Mad Men and I think his price would be perfect for this. The only thing that irks me would be the longer hair and greying. Don’t know if he could pull of the Dr. Strange look.
Jim Caviezel. Tall, dark hair, could pull off the grey streaks. Has an intense commanding presence (think Deja Vu). Unheard of in the comic book movie world (which is increasingly hard to find). The only arguement that can be made, he can be a little too dry. But that fits into the Dr. Strange persona; plus if you are a fan of “Person of Interest” you can see that he can crack a joke to lighten the mood when the scene needs a little relief.
For a director, go with Kevin Smith. He would not cost a fortune, and is a huge fan boy. Expect him to stay true to the fans, but would also bring a Joss Whedon style writer/director aspect that could bring the masses (hey it worked for The Avengers). Just don’t let him cast Ben Affleck or Matt Damon and you’re set!
Strongly, strongly concur about NOT using Depp. The fans are ignoring the fact that he hasn’t much focused on studying serious acting…for years. Now, you might say, “wait, he’ll be serious for this”, but his has that hammy baggage that would detract. You need someone that is serious, but interesting, which is hard. Michael Fassbender would be good, but he’s already filled another super role recently and is probably not interested in another. You need serious gravitas to do this right. Here are some other thoughts…
1. Ewan McGregor – We know he can do mystical. He’s looking old enough now and is solid.
2. Daniel Day-Lewis – He may be too established, but you never know. Nearly always interesting on camera and this would be a very different sort of movie for him.
3. Aidan Quinn – This guy has largely been off of the radar, but watch Legends of the Fall if you need to see how he’d do. He can do serious and vulnerably led astray quite well.
4. Zachary Quinto – A bit on the young side, but he’d probably do a very good job of Strange battling both his inner demons (hopefully a part of the story line), as well as those on the outside.
Jason Isaacs. Nuff said.
Hey, since Awake got cancelled he ought to have some free time on his hands.
Got to say there are some brilliant decisions in the comments that I never considered.
Loving the Jim Caviezel and Jon Hamm suggestions, particularly the latter. And he’s the right sort of size star to fit with Marvel’s choices to date. Zachary Quinto would also be an interesting choice, especially with Star Trek 2 coming out before this hypothetical film would be appearing, increasing his profile a little more. Nice shout on Isaacs too. For some reason Strange is always British in my head, or at least speaks with a British accent (no idea why because he is supposed to be American as far as I know), so I’d love to see this version.
Keep ‘em coming chaps. And check back in the week BradAllenSays because I’m planning an article like this on Luke Cage and Iron Fist!
I’m surprised no one has thrown out viggo mortensen. Viggo can definitely pull off the seriousness and the gravitas, and has proven he works incredibly well in an ensemble and is interested in genre work (though less recently). He also wouldnt come with a price tag like Depps, or a track record like Dempsey’s.
What about Alan Rickman?
Here’s a crazy thought…. What about Hugh Laurie??? He’s already got the jaded, arrogant, but likeable doctor role down on “House” and he’s never really been in a big effects driven film before(I think???). With “House” ending this year his schedule is more open as well. Also, I hate the fact that everybody thinks these characters need to look like they just stepped out of a Playgirl magazine spread…..
Dude… Hugh Laurie. Mind. Blown.
I thought Alan Rickman was a great suggestion from Andiemus, but Jeremy has truly won with his Hugh Laurie mention. Very good shout. Would love to see that movie.
Viggo & Cronenberg: two great tastes that taste great together :D
I think Josh Brolin, maybe Guy Pierce or Stuart Towsend
Wow I am floored by the Hugh suggestion! IN my opinion he is one of the most versatile actors there is! Having played a crippled doctor so well for so long establishes sets him up well. He is also a comedic genius. I really think there is not much he could do wrong.
Dempsy is a no go because I don’t want to hear his voice making any incantations!. Depp Either. Unlike other heroes I feel that Dr. Strange demands someone capable of having a booming baritone for casting spells and cursing monsters! Neeson I think also fits in this role.
No young actors for DR Strange! No short actors!
Now here is my contribution to the debate. Even though he has established himself in more of the tough guy type of characters he does have the chops and he the looks. However I think that Hugh Jackman could pull of a surprising performance as Dr Strange. Yes I said it wolverine actor to play Strange. Why I think it could work. One HJ is a very talented actor. Lately though he has been kinda doing the saem kind of characters. Strange would be totally different for him and give him an opportunity to show that he has more to offer. Something that I think HJ really wants in his career. 2 They managed to turn Jhonny Storm into Captain America! Storm and Cap are also very different and they pulled that off well. 3 HG does have a trained voice that would come in handy for booming out curses on dormamuu!
I agree. I thought about Jackman myself but stopped short due to the Wolverine thing. Although Chris Evans made the switch from FF to Cap, as you’ve pointed out, he was far less well known for that than Jackman is for Logan. Another factor is that, whilst Evans was a hired gun, Jackman IS the Wolverine franchise: he’s still developing a new movie for the character and remains very hands-on in terms of the scripts and choice of director. I think he’d be an excellent Strange (mainly imagining him in Prestige) but I can’t see it happening.
Hugh Laurie on the other hand: perfect.
I like where you’re going with setting this up as Strange predating Iron Man and settin this up in the 60′s or 70′s.
Taking on that, I like to anchor the story in the present. Bookend it with modern day scenes. The good doctor telling the tale of his origin. For an older Strange I like Neeson. He has a great presence about him. For the younger Strange in the main part of the story, I would personally prefer either Josh Brolin or Christian Bale. They could definitely pull off the journey that Strange takes from arrogant surgeon to downtrodden nobody to Sorceror Supreme.
Although I like most/all of the suggestions made so far, my heart has always been with Gary Oldman playing Dr Strange. Liam Neeson would be good but, as many have said, I’m not sure I can take him seriously anymore.
Depp would be a good choice. I think he could def pull it off. Though lately he’s done mostly comdetic roles and always has, hes a great actor who i think could pull it off. Neeson is also a fantastic choice. Not take him seriously? Even if its a bad movie, he has such a grand presence thats made him one of my favorite actors. And by presence if you have seen Schindler’s List,Taken,Batman Begins,The Grey then you know what I’m talking about. Vigo is also a great choice, but I kinda thought for him as a villain, maybe as Klaw in Black Panther?
I think the best star selection for the role of Doctor Strange is Edward Norton. His role in the Illusionist was nothing short of fantastic, and if you have not seen this movie, check it out. I guarantee, once you have seen it, you’ll be convinced that he would make the ultimate Doctor Strange character.
I suggest that you might want to seriously consider the brilliant and very talented David Tennant whom I think would make an excellent Doctor Strange. He plays both comedy and drama exceedingly well. One minute he’ll have you laughing and the next he is very serious and can make you cry. He has lots of screen and stage credits and is a joy to watch and listen to. To make it even more interesting, let him use his natural Scottish accent. I think he’d be wonderful and they love and recognize him acround the world, though his work is only starting to be more noticed in the US, so he’s not “oversaturated” as some other prospects, who are. He’s gaining US popularity through the older Doctor Who reruns. He’s a gifted dramatic actor, but can be loads of fun when the occasion calls for it. Check out his many works.
I think Edward Norton was kicked out of everything Marvel for good. Granted the Human Torch is Captain America now, but I doubt it. With that said, I vote Jude Law. Just to see that Downey x Law relationship again in something that isn’t Sherlock
Robert, I’m with you on loving the current Dr. S without know too much about 60s-90s. Hugh Laurie is great providing he’s not too Dr. Housey. Jonathan Rhys Meyers definitely has the expression and intensity, and certainly the acting chops to pull it off – if only he were a bit taller. Still 5′ 10″ isn’t too bad. Nathan Fillion, a personal favorite of mine, has the build (and the fan base) but I wouldn’t cast him in a role where he couldn’t be quippy. Paul Bettany would also pull it off brilliantly. My #1 would though is JRM.
And as for story, yup, he needs to have had a bit more of a head start being a superhero, but I would love to see his story told a little out of sequence. I mean he deals with time and inter dimensional travel, and some of the strangest stuff in the Marvel universe. I think it would be fitting if the telling of his story had just a little bit of that obscurity thrown in there. Maybe not “Momento” out of sequence, but picking up right in the middle to where the audience can feel how weird his job is before they get used to it.
I personally like Gary Oldman for the part. Yeah, he’s pretty much contractually obligated hi life to WB, but his myriad talents as an actor as well as looks could be good for the part. For example, see his performance as Sirius Black. He can be stoically superhuman but emotionally human. Another great benefit is his age but flexibility; he looks old enough to have origins in the Vietnam War, but he also looks strong enough to still hold his own against Marvel-grade opponents.
Hugh Laurie could be brilliant. I’m not sure he could pull off the costume, but his years of experience as Dr. House have led the public to see him as the same; you don’t have to know him to know who he’s played. With that said, that same general perception could lead viewers to wonder when Dr. House became a superhero. It might not hurt the character; in fact, his fame might attract more viewers to the film, especially those elusive new comic readers. Still… my apprehensions about him are more appearance based than anything else. As a fan of the original comics, I would like it to be someone who can pull off the look of Strange himself. Just an honest opinion though!
I know this is crazy, but maybe George Clooney. We all know he has a wide range of acting jobs. He has the comedic level from the Ocean’s movies. And he has the seriousness from his more recent films.
I think Viggo Mortensen would make an excellent Stephen Strange or even Eric Bana.
Eddie Izzard would make a perfect Dr.Strange.
I don’t think Clooney would work. I don’t think he is serious enough.
Another Batman, Michael Keaton, is a possibility as strange. I’m not sure he would wear a cape again though.
In the Tim Burton version, Helena Bonham Carter would play Doctor Strange’s main squeeze Clea, of course. I must stress that Burton should not be allowed anywhere near the movie by the way.
Played by Edward Norton, directed by Darrin Aronofsky.

I agree with Rob’s input completely that he posted. Depp, absolutely not, Dempsey, not even close, nor anyone else for that matter. I think that Jim Caviezel or James Marsden (even though he was Cyclops). I am surprised that no one in here mentions Jim in the Count of Monte Cristo, he literally wheres an outfit identical to Dr. Strange in the comics (midpart of the movie), and his face and physique are extremely similar. If they cast him I will go see it, anybody else, except James Marsden as a backup, I will not!
From playing one doctor to another – David Tennant.
I wonder if Daniel Day-Lewis is a Marvel fan? Too much to ask for I suppose, so how about Clive Owen? Zack Snyder or David Cronenberg to direct.
Ok….the Thought of a Dr. Strange Movie? Fantastic. Him as an Avenger…..not so much. Yes…in the newer comics he has worked with the Avengers…and several times in his past history he has worked alongside them when serious world-ending threats occur. But this is the hero that waaaaaaaay back..when faced with such a threat, formed his own group of heroes, the roster-shifting, much maligned Defenders (of which the Hulk was ALSO a founding member). Yes, He’d be a great asset to the Avengers and provide the magical essence that, other than Thor, isn’t really there. But he is more likely to group his own group of heroes together than co-opt a group already in existence.
No, having said this, if they DO put Stephen Strange into the movie, Dempsey would be an ADEQUATE candidate for the role. Better choices would indeed include Jim Caviezel, as he can easily portray such a role as the Sorceror Supreme without breaking a sweat. Other options, borrowing Jeff’s idea of one doctor to another would not be David Tennant, as much as i loved him the role of The Doctor, but instead Christopher Eccleston, the man who preceded him in that role. But if you plan on having the original storyline set in the 60′s and have a modern, much older Dr. Strange then I propose choosing one of the preceding for the 60′s origin, but as the older, greying Dr. Strange, none other than Sean Connery, assuming he’d agree to do another comic book movie after the disaster of LXG.
Kyle MacLachlan anyone?
A younger Jeremy Irons would’ve been fantastic I think. He has that deep British mystical voice and a great actor to boot. I love the Alan Rickman and Hugh Laurie suggestions. Both would be great. Here’s another suggestion, Gerard Butler of 300 fame. Has the look, the voice, and can surely pull of the action sequences.
I think Nicolas Cage would be great for the part of Dr. Strange.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bCmiaV7_cg Olá ! meu nome é Getulio silenzio e sou eternamente fã do Dr. estranho , desde minha juventude quando colecionava quadrinhos Marvel . Hoje sou musico e fiz este video recentemente homenageando este grandioso personagem , espero que gostem ! abraço deste “estranho” destas MINAS GERAES – BRASIL .
There has been talk that Derren Brown has been asked if he would take the role when it is made and I think he could do a really good job on it!
