Matt Reeves, director of Cloverfield and Let Me In has just landed the gig of directing The Twilight Zone, a big film version of Rod Serling's iconic and groundbreaking mid 20th century sci-fi t.v. show. Shooting will begin next summer for a 2013 release. It's setup at Warner Bros and Leonardo DiCaprio, who has wanted to make this film for the past three years ever since he bought the rights with his company Appian Way, will produce and may even star. Deadline has just broke the story tonight and confirm what we heard recently, that it won't be an anthology film like Spielberg and co's 80s effort but one "big science fiction action movie with a single freestanding story that is linked to the original series mainly in that it shares that familiarly eerie feel." Of course The Twilight Zone wasn't a 'big science action' franchise but what the hell, at least we know DiCaprio has a deep love for the property and wouldn't let anything with his name on it disrespect Serling. And yes, if he decided NOT to star in the movie he should totally introduce the story the way Serling used too... of course he should. No brainer. Reeves will spend the next few months tweaking rookie Jason Rothenberg's latest script into something matching his personal voice. We heard a couple of weeks ago that Warner Bros were finally getting serious about making a new Twilight Zone movie and some big, big names were to be approached for it. The likes of Christopher Nolan, Michael Bay, Alfonso Cuaron and Rise of the Apes helmer Rupert Wyatt but in the end it's gone to Reeves who wasn't even on that list to begin with. Presumably none of the above wanted it. But Reeves is a good choice and has excellent credentials for his two movies to date. Now he has the job of making a film that can in someway live up to the greatest achievement in fictional t.v. history. No pressure my son, no pressure. But we're all rooting for him. The Twilight Zone is truly the greatest and whether it's buying those blu-rays (worth every single penny by the way), travelling to Disneyland to unlock all the secrets of the Serling inspired Twilight Tower of Terror or being first in line to see a new movie carrying the iconic name... I'm there.
