Despite being a regular in the Joss Whedon universe, former Firefly actor Nathan Fillion is an unlikely choice to appear in any upcoming Avengers sequels, according to an interview the actor conducted recently with Digital Spy.
Most of you will remember Fillion as Captain Malcolm Reynolds, the cantankerous man at the helm of the good ship Serenity on Whedon’s cult classic – as well as big bad Caleb in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but more recently he has been linked as a fan favourite choice for Edgar Wright’s on-again off-again Marvel superhero movie Ant-Man.
Ant-Man is the superhero persona of Henry Pym, a once brilliant scientist who invents a substance that allows him to drastically alter his size. Pym was a founding member of the original Avengers unit and plays an integral role in the groups antics early on.
Despite the character’s introduction recently being revealed as the possible hidden extra at the end of the currently filming Iron Man 3, Ant-Man – which is to be directed by Edgar Wright and written by Joe Cornish – still has no one in place to play the lead and yet the internet has been abuzz with stories of Fillion’s casting.
So why exactly does Fillion think he wont be Marvel’s next big (literally) hero? The actor believes that he just isn’t a big enough name. He told Digital Spy:
“I have to be honest. The entertainment industry is an industry. I love telling stories but finance does meet art. If I were in charge of an Avengers sequel I would be very concerned about what kind of money I could make back overseas, and these kinds of things. I’m not quite at that level yet where I could just be plopped in there but I’m getting there. I’ve had more than my fair share of Joss Whedon projects. I find it very difficult, even being the selfish kind of guy I am, to say ‘give me more.’”
So for those of you out there that are hopeful of seeing Mr Fillion in the next few Marvel movies you might not want to get your hopes up just yet. But if you’re really desperate to see him in spandex and a cape then you could always check out the 2010 movie Super where he plays The Holy Avenger. He has also regularly been cast as the voice of Hal Jordan as well as as Captain Hammer in the TV series Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.
