Hey, did you guys hear about how there’s going to be a new Star Wars movie in a couple years? And a trilogy after that? And God knows how many other films, TV shows, cartoons and etc. after that? I think I saw someone mention that somewhere recently…
OK, this isn’t really news. Everyone knows that a galaxy far, far away is coming to a theater near you in the very near future (Mayans be damned) and the speculation for what the new film might be about, who may write/direct it, what crafts service will be providing the food, etc. Rather than join in on that, I’d like to take the time to give some (completely unsolicited) advice to the executives and filmmakers that are prepping the future of this saga.
(And let me preface this by saying that I am woefully ignorant of the Expanded Universe or whatever it is. My only knowledge of those books comes from listening to my friends go on and on about them at the dinner table, while I sadly ate cold French fries and pondered what mistakes brought me to this. So if you’re interested in knowing what stories and characters should get their own film, search elsewhere.)
So, without further ado:

I agree that whilst ‘Return of the Jedi’ ended the story good and proper, I’ll reserve judgement on the new trilogy until I either see it or they got some seriously major talent to direct it… Alfonso Cuaron is my first choice.
Thank you, Brendan, for crystallizing my thoughts on this matter. As a 43 year-old man who saw the first film in the theater as an 8 year-old boy, I am filled with ambivalence, dread and hope over the fact of new “Star Wars” films. While they present a fantastic opportunity to rescue the franchise from the sterile, bland and lifeless oblivion of the prequels, they also represent the deadliest minefield in terms of character and story.
I could not agree more with the need to completely restart the series with new characters, new worlds, new stories and new mythology. Anything else, any mention of the previous films except in brief historical or character references would be an instant fourth wall breaker. More to the point, the extreme expectations and comparisons that would be leveled at a film that treads over such exhausted paths would result in internet blogging and flogging to the point of insanity.
Start over new or don’t start at all!
