It’s been hard not to get particularly excited about the prospect of Oblivion, thanks to its starry cast (though perhaps not its star Tom Cruise for all film fans) – the graphic novel was great, and director Joseph Kosinski handled what could have been an abysmal Tron sequel extremely masterfully.

The official synopsis read intriguingly enough…

Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

…And the first trailer established a striking aesthetic, and struck a tone that implied a marriage of Wall-E, I Am Legend and The Matrix (especially in the implied relationship between Morgan Freeman’s character and Cruise).

The cast reads extremely well, even if it feels a little like a project that a younger, less established actor might take on, but you can’t fault Cruise’s commitment. Let’s just hope Kosinski’s attempt to channel the sci-fi films of the 1970s is successful in the end, and prevails over the inevitably unbalanced focus on Cruise’s involvement, and the inter-galactic plot details. The signs are certainly good.

Here’s the new international trailer in full…

I still have some concerns over how well Cruise really sells the character – Will Smith was remarkably good in I Am Legend because he has the ability to transmit mental and emotional scars pretty effortlessly. To date, we’ve never really seen that subtlety in Cruise, and he still doesn’t really have as much everyman appeal as he might think, regardless of the Yankees cap.

Still, it looks intriguing.

There’s also a brand new international poster…
