Who Should Win

Faces Places

The legendary Agnes Vardes is still making incisive films at 90, a remarkable feat itself before we even consider the quality of Faces Places - and what a documentary it is. A celebration of communities and the people they're made up of, it's at once both intimate and vast in scope and a powerful meditation on humanity and life.

Who Will Win

Faces Places

The Academy have already bestowed an honorary Oscar upon Vardes, but now they have the chance to give her - and collaborator JR - the real deal. Vardes' work stands out among the crowd and has played well to various audiences - it won the top documentary prize at Cannes - and, although there's some stiff competition (Icarus is another strong contender here) it should have enough fans to take it over the line.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
