Peter Berg Says Will Smith Has Idea For Hancock 2

A couple of years back, almost every blockbuster Will Smith had ever starred in had a proposed sequel being written by a Hollywood screenwriter somewhere on the planet. Independence Day 2, I Robot 2, I Am Legend 2, Bad Boys 3, Hancock 2 and a Men in Black 3 were all trying to tempt Smith, who was on acting hiatus at the time, to make a blockbuster comeback. In the end he chose Men in Black 3, reviving a franchise that had been dormant for almost a decade and the end product is released this summer. However just because he chose MIB III over the other projects above doesn't mean he won't come back to them some day and according to Hancock director Peter Berg in a new interview with Comic Book Movie, a follow-up to the 2008 original superhero film may still be on the cards.

"We've been talking about the sequel between us, Will Smith, Michael Mann and Akiva Goldsman and myself," he said. "We're all interested, but we literally just have trouble getting into the same room at the same time. We did have a series of meetings last year and started to hash out an idea for sequel -- and Will Smith actually had the idea -- so I think it will happen, it's just a question of timing."

Of course the only real person they have to convince to make the film is Smith himself. If they can get him to agree to make it, then it will happen and news that Smith has an idea for the sequel is promising for those who want to see it. Despite a less than stellar critical or fan response, on the backs of Will Smith's star power Hancock still managed to gross $600 million worldwide. That's more than Captain America and Thor this year. A sequel revolving around a major villain and further developing the ancient backstory of Theron & Smith's characters were promised but when Smith took time off it never happened. Hancock revolved around a tormented, asshole superhero who endures a complex relationship with the wife (Charlize Theron) of his Public Relations guru (Jason Bateman). Though what was originally spoken of as an extremely dark take on the superhero genre was changed into a Will Smith starring vehicle that was disjointed and for all it's ambitions, kind of average. As we say the sequel will happen if Will Smith wants it too. He is currently working on M. Night Shyamalan's new sci-fi blockbuster After Earth and will probably do at least one smaller drama after that, so a Hancock sequel if it ever happens is still some years away.
