Possible Director Shortlist For The New Spider-Man Revealed

Can Sony and Marvel agree on one of these names?

Most of the talk around Spider-Man at the moment concerns who's going to be playing the web-slinger, first set to appear in Captain America: Civil War, but there's also the matter of who'll be directing him in his own currently-untitled movie, due for release in 2017. Drew Goddard was thought to be in pole position of the role, as he was set to direct The Sinister Six before Marvel and Sony decided to team up, but according to Deadline there are now five names in the running. These include Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies, 50/50), Ted Melfi (St. Vincent), Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein (Vacation) and Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite). One thing all of those names have in common is experience in comedy films, which suggests that Marvel/Sony will be looking for a lighter tone to their new Spidey film, which would be in keeping with the character, and especially the plans to have a Peter Parker who is still in high school. The site also reports that a decision could be made in the coming week, and if that's the case then an announcement as to who'll be putting on the suit should be on its way as well. Asa Butterfield is believed to be the frontrunner for that gig.
