Now that the consensus is out on Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’, I think it’s fair to say that most of us were more than a little crestfallen by the whole thing. After months of hype and speculation, we found ourselves feeling a sense of overwhelming disappointment when the credits began to roll. At least I did anyway.
It tends to happen this way. Whenever I get excited for a film, no matter what that film is, I always find myself more than disappointed by the end result. Maybe my expectations are too high? Possibly. But more than likely, the films themselves have failed to live up to the promises that they so boldly made during their marketing campaigns. It got me thinking about all those other films that I initially couldn’t wait to rush to the cinema on opening day to see, then be wholly frustrated by the sheer mediocrity or ineptitude on display. Films that promised so much, yet delivered so little.
So in honor of the grave disappointment that was ‘Prometheus’, here are fifteen other blockbusting disappointments:
15. The Lovely Bones (2009)
Anticipation was high for Peter Jackson’s adaptation of Alice Sebold’s novel. Jackson had already proven himself in adapting visually challenging source material and if anyone could handle the complex dichotomy of visuals that Sebold’s novel provided, then Jackson was surely the man to do it. He had also acquired for himself a solid cast to lead the way including Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci and Saorise Ronan as Susie.
Everything was in place for something truly special. Unfortunately the final result turned out to be something rather anticlimactic. While Tucci was a standout and the visuals were well conceived, the film was a mess structurally, eschewing many of the book’s elements, resulting in a confused mess of a film that never truly worked as the compelling narrative about grief, loss and moving on as it should’ve been.
14. Iron Man 2 (2010)
The first Iron Man movie was one of the surprise hits of 2008. A brilliantly enjoyable comic book movie with a superb turn from Robert Downey Jr. as the billionaire playboy donning a “titanium alloy” suit to successfully privatize world peace. Naturally, anticipation for part 2 in the saga was high. Jon Favreau returned as director with the added bonus of Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell filling out villain duties and Scarlett Johansson and Don Cheadle rounding out the rest of the cast. And yet, what we got was basically an extended trailer to a film that was a good two years away.
What was so great about the first movie was that it was about Tony Stark. Here he is merely sidelined for the majority of the film. Featuring a lacklustre script underwritten villains and disappointing action set pieces, with more emphasis being placed on the teasing aspects of the larger Marvel universe, the film was a grave disappointment. Hopefully now that The Avengers have done their thing, Tony Stark can get back to doing what he does best for Shane Black’s third installment.

I’d agree with about half of those but I can’t say that Hulk was a disappointment, I really dig that flick. And I raise my hand for Menace. Loved it then. Love it now. Indy is borderline and despite some issues with Watchmen I don’t think we could have got much closer to pure Watchmen greatness in the current climate of movie making, so I can’t put that on my list either.
I agree with Marcus’s comment The Hulk is so underrated, I watched it again a few days ago and its a good film. Also, Watchmen was awesome. That film should not be on the list. Id go as far to say its the best comic book movie ive ever seen and i enjoyed it much more than the same-old-same-old Avengers movie.
Watchmen the best superhero movie? I found the movie boring actually. In fact I didn’t know they were DC…I didn’t even know they were comic heroes until the movie came out. Never heard of them before. Wasn’t that rated ‘R’? Very gory and even had a porn scene between Owl and the Solk Spectre II. Don’t mind it, but in a comic book movie?
Then again everyone is entitled to their opinions. I am sure a large majority would vote ‘Avengers’. Critics and fans alike, just look at the feedback and revenue.
Joe, I’m guessing you don’t actually read comics since you didn’t know Watchmen. It’s like not knowing that V for Vendetta was a graphic novel before a movie.
I also liked Watchmen, and its ok that the first Joe didn’t. I agree with Nick that it is really only enjoyable to watch the comic come to life; if you haven’t read it, I’m not sure it would be nearly as fun.
Some fit titles, but overall a flawed list. You left out ‘The Village’ and ‘Lady in the Water!’
Were either of those particularly hyped?
Glad to see some saying Hulk is underrated, I’ve always said as much. Also completely disagree on Prometheus and Watchmen. Adore them both. The one I agree with the most is X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Ugh.
Also, I’m not sure if the consensus is that ‘most of us’ are disappointed with Prometheus. In my experience it seems a pretty balanced split either way. Maybe I’m wrong, I’m not sure.
“Raise your hand if you WEREN’T disappointed when you first saw Episode 1 for the first time? Yeah, thought so.”
Might be making assumptions here…but I think you’re forgetting how old your target audience was at the time of the release. I DUG it as a child.
Iron Man 2 and Star Wars shouldn’t be on this list. I loved Iron Man 2 in fact liked it better then first. So much that I am disappointed it hasn’t been on TV yet, only seen it once. More characters, more action. In fact it made the most revenue out of the Avengers heroes, more than first IM.
Also Episode I Star Wars was a huge hit. I remember standing in line waiting to get in to see it. I enjoyed it, saw it 3 times in theaters.
Even Lost World was a hit, more variety than the first.
Some of the movies you mention were blockbuster hits so don’t belong here.
You should put ‘Green Lantern’ and ‘Conan’, the new one, not the Schwarzenegger one, that was good.
Disagree about Grindhouse. Okay, maybe Planet Terror was underwhelming, but Death Proof is an amazing film.
On another note, I cant believe how many of the films on your list are sequels. Is there a lesson there? Perhaps more of a lesson for us, the movie goers, not the creators?
I adore Watchmen. Even as a fan of the comic, I fail to see what anyone was disappointed with. Prometheus was solid in my opinion, but also somewhat flawed.
The rest were all awful disappointments.
Cloverfield!!!
viral campaign was amazing trailer release was amazing movie was craptastic
I agree with number 1, and I’d place the Indiana Jones movie up to 2 from 3.
Yeah I agree. Death Proof is brilliant and Grindhouse was a lot of fun generally, as the hype promised. It was only the box office that was disappointing. It’s the same train of thought when people are hailing Mission Impossible 4 as the best in the series, just because III had a poor box office turnout. III is by far the best in the series.
Wow, seems like you’re in the minority when it comes to Watchmen here, Nick. I thought it was a fantastic film, my personal fave of 2009.
I was 24 when I saw The Phantom Menace and I wasn’t dissappointed either. Maybe you shouldn’t assume that everyone who reads a movie blog is a basement dwelling, fat slob, rapist.
I also liked Watchmen, though I didn’t know much about it so I can’t say if I was dissappointed or not. Lost World isn’t all that bad. It just perhaps was a story that didn’t need to be told.
I cant believe so many people are willing to admit that they like Phantom Menace. I can appreciate a rubbish film but that film is beyond crap, but then I didnt like Avatar either. Avatar should have been on the list.
I’m suprised that Terminator Salvation was not on the list. The 1st Transformers I was pretty dissapointed in. I’m sorry if it wasn’t for the Soccent attack, the end battle or having Peter Cullen return to voice Optimus Prime it was pretty bad
Watchmen is class, best…opening…sequence…ever! Superman Returns was utter rubbish, I fell asleep and that only ever happened once before when I saw Multiplicity, so it has a special place in my heart (sort of!).
Most of Tim Burtons recent remakes, reboots, reimaginings should be in there…but it is only top 15.
And finally Terminator Salvation oh and T3 as an afterthought.
