Ready Player One Has Already Won 2018's Best Movie Moment

You really need to see this movie...

It might only be March and there may be some pretty huge movies still to come out this year - Avengers: Infinity War, Solo, Aquaman and Ant-Man & The Wasp to name but a few - but Steven Spielberg's return to blockbuster form might well have already stole the best movie moment of the year.

Ready Player One is, without a doubt, a 5 star Spielberg blockbuster. It is a stunning visual experience and a triumphant celebration of nostalgia that will not fail to raise a smile. It's a love letter to film fandom and to film itself and that one sequence, dedicated to the genius of Stanley Kubrick, will be talked about all year.

Without spoiling it ahead of release (a courtesy others apparently didn't believe fans deserved), the scene is basically a living Easter Egg - an immersive, hugely intelligent scene that forms part of the narrative's three central tasks that drops us and the characters literally into Kubrick's mind. Everything is brilliantly observed down to the very smallest detail and it is both delightfully smart and hugely funny. The film deserves to be seen for that alone.

And the praise for the scene comes from more than just a critical eye. Our own James Hunt spoke to Ready Player One's writer Ernest Cline about his favourite scene, and he alluded to this very sequence being his stand-out moment:

"Oh my gosh! Have you seen the movie yet? I don't wanna ruin it, but you'll know it when you see it. It's right in the middle of the movie, it's unexpected, and it's not in the novel, but it's very much in the spirit of something in the novel. You'll see, and it's going to be your favourite too, my prediction."

He's right about the favouritism. You're going to love it.
