San Andreas: What Did You Think?

The Rock's earthquake movie - hit or miss?

It's the end of May, which can only mean one thing - weekly big budget blockbuster releases! After the sublime Mad Max: Fury Road and the confused Tomorrowland, two movies that played very much to the film fan crowd, it's the time for big explosions. San Andreas sees "franchise viagra" Dwayne Johnson headline his second movie of the year. The conceit is simple; the San Andreas fault cracks open, leading to a continent decimating earthquake realised in expansive, large scale CGI. The Rock (going by the name Ray, but quite clearly The Rock) must save his family from the ensuing destruction, which includes collapsing buildings, giant chasms and towering waves. Think the great seventies disaster flicks brought unashamedly into the modern day and you're pretty much there. The film also stars Carla Gugino (Watchmen), Alexandra Daddario (Percy Jackson), Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four) and Paul Giamatti (too much to list), as well as a world-famous singer in an unexpected cameo. The film is out worldwide from today. You can read our thoughts on it here, but now it's your turn. What did you think of San Andreas? Is it an Earth-shattering success or uneventful disappointment?
