Simon Kinberg Writing X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Sequel

Finally some momentum on an X-Men: First Class sequel. It feels like it has taken them forever but 20th Century Fox have hired Simon Kinberg with the scripting duties on the film which is likely to go into production in 2013, for a release 2014. Work is well underway on the script. As you will probably recall there was a drawn out battle over the scriptwriting credits on X-Men: First Class with Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz eventually credited with the screenplay along with director Matthew Vaughn and his partner Jane Goldman, leaving Bryan Singer and Sheldon Turner with a 'story' credit. The thing is the script passed through many different hands before it landed on any of their doors. Kinberg, a producer on X-Men: First Class from the beginning, probably oversaw all the drafts and Fox have signalled him out as one of the leading creative voices of the last film. He was the writer on X-Men: The Last Stand (yes... the screenplay where genuine threat/tension was replaced by simply killing off characters) and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, who also has credits on Sherlock Holmes, Jumper, XX2 and next year's films Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and the McG rom-com This Means War. If you listen ok to the Blu-ray commentary on X-Men: First Class, he also takes credit for the hiring of Vaughn after enjoying Kick-Ass. Kingberg will likely write the first draft and then hand it over to Goldman and Vaughn for completion. No story details yet for the sequel but Matthew Vaughn did tell us over the summer he wanted X-Men: Second Class (as we've been calling it internally at WhatCulture!) to begin with Magneto helping along the bullet from Lee Harvey Oswald that killed JFK because he wouldn't acknowledge the mutants work in stopping global annihilation from World War III. €œI thought it would be fun to open with the Kennedy Assassination, and we reveal that the magic bullet was controlled by Magneto. That would explain the physics of it, and we see that he€™s pissed off because Kennedy took all the credit for saving the world and mutants weren€™t even mentioned.€ We expect Vaughn to be back to direct but he has said next year he will be making a movie with Mark Millar instead, so don't expect this one in production until 2013. All major characters are contracted to return and don't at all be surprised if they have the idea of Hugh Jackman being a major character this time around as box office proves he is a huge marquee draw.
